Lockdown has not meant downtime for Sam Duckworth AKA Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Over the last 12 months Southend’s premier musical polymath has not only produced singles for Cool Thing Records trailblazer BLAB but also the latest album for Benjamin Francis Leftwich who is signed to the 1975’s much loved label ‘Dirty Hit’. If that wasn’t enough, he has also formed a band with the legendary Dele Sosimi (Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80) and developed a beautiful reissue of his debut album due in September.

Sam remains a vocal political presence within his community and after 15 years of artistry and activism he returns with a new stand-alone single called ‘Drift’.

Check out ‘Drift’ below!

We caught up with Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. as talked about his latest single and more!

So how has the release of your latest single ‘Drift’ gone down with fans so far?

Feedback has been good thank you, I’m always making music, so keen to release things by surprise, when the moment feels right in the run up to starting the next album. I hope it came as a pleasant surprise and am pleased to give something to those who are consistently asking if I’m going to “go back to drum and bass.”

What was your favourite moment making this single?

If I’m honest, finishing it. Some songs fall out of you and some are like a battle. This song was an evolution, over the course of 18 months, where sections morphed and evolved and eventually, this song just clicked and felt right, that was a good evening!

Why is this single so important to you?

I try not to overthink songs, certainly regarding their importance to me. I see them as snapshots of moments in time, either political or personal, or in this instance a mixture of the two. This song went hand in hand with one of the weirder years I’ve had, parts feel like a musical release and parts an emotional, I guess, if nothing else, this is flag in the ground for 2021!

You’ve had a busy 12 months writing producing songs, do you prefer producing for other artists or for yourself?

They’re both totally different. Writing songs for me is something I have to do and producing is something I chose to do. I love helping other people hit the objectives and goals they set out to reach. Producers and musicians have done that for me over the years and I believe its part of the musical cycle of life to want to do the same.

If you could collab with any artist in the future, is there any particular collab you would have in mind?
This is an ongoing and really long list! Headline names would be Kano, Shy Fx & Breakage, I’d love to work more with Lily Allen and I’d love to see how Kae Tempest works! Sadly, the answer to this question would’ve been Tony Allen, the greatest!

Will you be releasing an EP/Album this year?

Never say never, but probably not! Chronicles 15 year anniversary reissue somehow feels like a new album, so that is occupying my non writing brain space and sometimes making albums and eps is about finishing more than starting and my finishing energy resides there and on projects I am producing. I have recently finished a collaboration record with Dele Sosimi, that might see the light of day this year or could come in 2022!

If you could perform at any venue in the near future, where would be and why?

London Astoria, but sadly no longer with us. I’m thankful to be visiting some of my favourite venues on the Chronicles tour in September/October! I won’t pick favourites, as I genuinely love all the places I am returning to!
