Interview: The Wolf Howls When I Scream Your Name

The Wolf Howls When I Scream Your Name recently released their new single The Wild Turns back in July.

The three piece consisting of Matty, Sam & Harry have been busy recording new music which they have announced that they will share later this year.

We caught up with lead singer Matt Awbery shortly before The Wild Turns was released and you can check out the interview below!

First of all, how are you all coping as a band during the current COVID-19 crisis in keeping on top of making music?

Pretty well, my work rate has oddly slowed down, I have written four songs in total, I used to write three a week, but I wrote one the other day but it’s getting there! I’m considering putting more minimal ideas in the other guys hands, it might spark something off, towards our last practices Harry did some cool post punk bass lines so maybe there’s something there.

Do you think the current crisis has affected the album in any way or the way you have been working together as a band?

Not really to be honest

Has the sound changed at all in comparison to your earlier EP’s?

Well I was going back the emo sound we started with and I was going to call the album Pond Life, but I kind of think i have four songs that really would suite an MTV unplugged almost grunge kind of recording and we were kind of going that way anyway so I’m a little unsure. I’d probably say we’ll just release the emo stuff during lockdown and jump in the studio when we can

How does this affect the album as a whole?

Well I recorded one album in my old band and there were some big patches though there were great moments, with this band I’ve made more of an effort to make everything really cohesive, though we try and fuck with each release and make it a bit different.

How do you tie in all the different themes of each record?

Well, I’m very interested in making post modern music, I like to reference influences a lot in my lyrics, but to be honest all my stuff is about my overlook of life mostly, the last two ep titles have been a bit suggestive of a yearning to be released from life but I don’t feel like that most of the time.

What is it like producing your own music videos?

It’s been good for Sam’s work, I’ve been able to be pretty honest with Sam about stuff, if you look at his videos at the beginning compared to now they’ve improved I love what he did for ‘It Hurts Me’

Who are your inspirations?

Life, Radiohead, Alice In Chains, Failure. A lot of stuff that we aren’t like inspires me, my favourite band are The Brian Jonestown Massacre, I love The Rolling Stones album Their Satanic Majesties Request and I love Sgt Peppers by The Beatles

Finally, who would be your dream band to tour with?

Failure
