Interview: The Faim’s Linden Marissen talks upcoming album ‘State of Mind’

The Faim have shared “Humans,” the first single from their forthcoming debut album, State of Mind, which will be released on Friday, September 13th via BMG. The track was produced with Patrick Morrisey (Weezer, Pharrell, Hayley Kiyoko) and David Dahlquist (Aurora, Fletcher) in New York and Los Angeles, and includes a great balance of unique pop-rock sounds, rounded out with lush live band elements and a massive, resonant chorus.
“ ‘Humans’ is about embracing the unique qualities that make up who we are, from our individual character and personality traits, to our strengths and weaknesses. These diverse characteristics, and how they evolve throughout our lives, show us what it means to be human and how connected we all actually are,” the band explains.

The Faim unveiled their debut EP, Summer Is a Curse, last year and wasted no time creating music for their first full-length effort, State of Mind. Over the course of two years, the group worked with numerous producers to craft a collection of songs that showcase a vast range of styles and tones. The tracks, recorded mostly in Los Angeles in various studios, reveal how The Faim has evolved since their inception. Thelyrics come from emotions or experiences personal to the musicians as a whole, with each song centering on an idea that’s relatable to both themselves and their listeners. Overall, State of Mind reveals a band on the rise, and a group of artists who are all about making genuine songs that bring people together and create a community.

“We write from an honest place, and that’s something we always want to stay true to,” says frontman, Josh Raven. “It has to resonate with us for it be relatable to our fans. On this album it was about connecting with ourselves and exploring our influences and our own talent. If we stick to who we are and what we feel, hopefully everyone else will find something in the music too,” he elaborates.State of Mind includes eight brand new tracks in addition to previously-released singles “Summer Is a Curse” and “Amelie.” If you were able to catch The Faim on tour earlier this year, you may have also heard them play “Beautiful Drama” and “Infamous,” two additional standout songs on the album.

We managed to catch up with drummer Linden Marissen as he talks about the upcoming album and more!

So how excited are you for your upcoming State of Mind World Tour?

Out of 10 probably a 9 … or a 10. It’ll be the first time we get to play some of the new songs from the album that will be out pretty soon.

Is there any particular country you’re looking forward to playing the most?

Germany’ we’re playing a bunch of festivals there. We’re especially looking forward to Lollapalooza. Also, the beer is really good in Germany!

You’re returning to the UK in August; has the UK got a special place in your hearts?

Yeah, it sure does. We had a lot of great shows in the UK earlier this year. Probably the most memorable of those dates was our sold-out show in London, that was wild.

So you recently announced your debut album State of Mind. Can you tell us anything about this?

It’s out 13 September. And no, I can’t really tell you much about it, I’ve mostly been told to keep it a secret. But the track listing is out now, and there’s probably another single on the way too.

You’ve worked with a lot of big artists already but if you could work with any band or artist on one new song, who would it be and why?

Josh Homme. That guy is a lord; his songwriting is incredible.

When you’re not working on music, what do you all like to do in your spare time?

I don’t know about the other guys but I enjoy playing basketball and spending time with my mates. But these days it’s pretty rare that I’m not working on something music related; I usually get pretty bored if I’m not chipping away at something.

Finally (for now) what’s the alternative music scene like in Australia at the moment?

It’s pretty good. There are a lot of cool alternative rock bands coming out of Australia these days. We’re actually heading out for a co-headline tour of the USA with a pretty rad one (Stand Atlantic) in September and October this year!
