Interview: shallow pools talk upcoming singles

Massachusetts pop rock all female trio shallow pools are set to release two singles It’s A You Thing (13th July) and Sinking (24th August). shallow pools strives to promote inclusivity, and wants to establish a welcoming environment for people of all ages, sexualities, and gender identities. Consisting of Jess Gromada (guitar), Glynnis Brennan (vocals, bass), and Ali Ajemian (drums), the trio became friends in 2012, and started out playing acoustic covers for fun around their hometown. In early 2016, the group decided it was time to give songwriting a shot. They released an EP under a different name and played at notable Boston venues including the Middle East Downstairs and Upstairs, O’Brien’s, and the Hard Rock. As the group continued to evolve and grow sonically and aesthetically, a change in name was inevitable and in April of 2018 shallow pools surfaced. We caught up with the trio as they talked about their upcoming singles and more!

How pumped are you for the release of It’s A You Thing?

We’re so excited!!! It’s the first song we’re releasing as shallow pools- it’s so different from anything we’ve done before, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it!!!

Can you tell us something about the single no one else knows?

We had completely different lyrics when we went into the studio to record the song. After we finished the instrumental, we were inspired by the vibe and wrote new lyrics that we’re much happier with!

So you’ve also announced another single Sinking, can you tell something about this?

Sinking is probably my (Glynnis) favorite song that we’ve written so far. It’s about trying to cope with depression and anxiety, but the music is pretty upbeat. We also got to feature some of our best friends on group vocals in this song!

Will you be releasing EP/Album this year?

Yes! We’re working on finishing up an EP, and plan on releasing it in the fall!

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

We’d work with Paramore because we love their music and think that they’re all extremely talented. They’re not afraid to change genre/styles and we really admire that.

What’s the alternative music scene like in Massachusetts?

Boston’s music scene is super eclectic, we’re always playing shows with bands from different genres. Everyone we’ve played with in Boston has been really supportive, and we’ve made lots of great friends!

What was the first ever gig you went to?

Glynnis: The first show I ever went to was Aaron Carter when I was, like 8… but I’d count Panic! At The Disco in 2008 as the first show I was super excited about.
Jess: My first concert was NSYNC when I was really young. I think the first gig I went to at a small club was Paramore in 2006! That was the show that made me want to play music.
Ali: My first concert ever was also Aaron Carter, but like Glynnis I don’t fully count it! When I was 13 I went to see Boys Like Girls/Metrostation/Good Charlotte/The Maine and that was the first concert I found on my own and went to without my parents.

Will you be touring at all this year?

No tour plans yet, but we have a few local shows lined up which you can find on our Facebook!
