Album Review: UK Subs – Subversions

Cover albums are a curious beast to tackle. The originals that (Sir) Charlie Harper and Co take on here, are in most cases best left to the originals. The MC5’s ‘Kick Out The Jams’ is standard fare while ‘Train Kept A-Rollin’ has been covered a multitude of times, that said, never with Harper’s distinctive Punk passion. A plodding ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’ is thankfully short before the pace quickens with a decent slice of Slaughter And The Dogs classic ‘Boston Babies’ along with a lively run through of Canadian Punks The Diodes ‘Tired of Waking Up Tired’. The standout track is Motorhead’s ‘Bomber’ which is delivered with a tangible sense of loss, respect and Subs Power. ‘Roadrunner’ is best avoided after the Pistols sardonic massacre, while The Stooges ‘1969’ and Bowie’s ‘Suffragette City’ have both been beaten to death by various bands of varying quality. The UK Subs can now spray paint their own name across this illustrious list.
