EP Review: Stand Atlantic – Sidewinder

Fresh from supporting NEW FOUND GLORY across their homeland Pop-Rock Aussie trio STAND ATLANTIC release the five track E.P ‘Sidewinder’ – By Guy Shankland. Title track and opener ‘Sidewinder’ is radio friendly angst ridden for all ages 2017 power-Pop. It’s heartbreak, first love, know it all, lost it all fodder, wrapped up in a one size fits all Punk formula that has not so much been hijacked by Pop bands but beaten into middle of the road submission. It what it is, and Stand Atlantic do it as well as anyone on this particular treadmill. ‘Mess I Made’ is a fine song, but lacks a much needed touch of originality. ‘Push’ goes for the slow acoustic gut wrenching start before morphing into Punk Pop by numbers, slow, fast, mid paced.. . Lead single ’Coffee At Midnight’ flies out of the blocks with a real zest and I would love to hear it as an acoustic track. SA are a good band and this is a good E.P but, and there’s a big but. This whole Punk-Pop genre is dying from formulaic dehydration, there’s no original flavours coming through, the creativity well is seemingly bone dry, plus every angle has been exploited both artistically and commercially. Enjoyable as Stand Atlantic are they may just be another medium sized fish fighting for oxygen in an already overflowing small tank that is in dire of some fresh water.
