Album Review: Birds – Everything All At Once

Brooklyn psyche rockers BIRDS release their debut album ’Everything All At Once’ and you will either love it or fall asleep to it, maybe even both – Guy Shankland.
Opening track ’See It All’ shuffles into the light with a laconic, mid-paced throwaway Strokes riff which complements the half talked, half sung tunefully lethargic vocals. Second single ‘Scatter’ shakes like a crack pipe in a junkies hand and when aurally inhaled is worryingly more-ish. Lead single ‘Get Away’ simmers with harmonised vocals that lurk in the lead singer’s shadows. The galloping beat resonates with Indie-Pop sensibilities that summon images of sugar infused, politically correct albeit slightly edgy adverts for phones, electric cars or the vomit inducing Jagermeister friends in the wood smug fest that incorporates every modern stereotype. (Beards, brawn, teamwork, fake judgemental smiles and titillation all wrapped up in shite Christmas jumpers.) ‘I Can’t Wait’ barely raises its head from a gluey psychedelic pillow while ‘Falling’ is a tender kiss of a lounging mid-paced love song. ‘Home Home, ’Everyday’ and final cut ’Slow Time’ all fall into the kicked back feel of a Sunday morning after the night before and while its not dull it’s not overly stimulating either. EAAO is the perfect accompaniment to a craft ale hangover for the modern day shoe gazing sorrowist.
