Live Review: Courage My Love at Southampton’s Talking Heads

Courage My Love

On a night where all the bands had a female front singer, the Talking Heads was full of girl power last week at Southampton’s Talking Heads.

The opening act Pretty Little Enemy  were awesome, the lead singer, Louise Body, had a ferocious voice on her. The band played an amazing cover of Katy Perry’s Dark Horse as Courage My Love watched on.

Another cover, by Nicki Minaj this saw Pretty Little Enemy sing Anaconda where Louise’s rapping was spot on. It was an awesome set and this band has plenty of potential.

Fresh from their Common People set, Signals put on an amazing show afterwards and this was their second time supporting Courage My Love.

The lead singer had a great voice on her and really interacted with the crowd as they played songs Self Medicate, Paraesthesia and Trojan – a more slower and beautiful sound to her voice  but soon kicked into a indie rock piece of art.

The band then mentioned the Manchester Attacks, encouraged local music and told people not to be afraid and sung Dusk which is just about that. Overall it was a great set from a very up and coming back from Southampton.

Halflives played an electronic but ferocious set as the Italians certainly done their home country proud and the lead singer, Linda Battilani, got the crowd to sing from the start.

They really got close with their fans while performing and presenting debut album Empty Rooms.

The band played Cold Light, which started off gloomy and had a real build up to it as the beautiful voice complemented the epic sounding instruments.

Halflives then played The Sickness before a magical acoustic cover of Welcome the Black Parade that sent goosebumps down your body.

The band played a really up beat song from their debut album near the end of their set titled Half Alive before they finished on Burn which was an awesome way to end the set leaving their core fan base on their knees.

Last up was Canadian band Courage My Love as the trio started with a good luck jump to start their set.

One of the first songs lead singer Mercedes Arn-Horn began with was Animal Heart and it began with a dancy backing track which was awesome and perfectly started and ended the catchy song.

They had plenty of energy and put 110% into their set with sister Phoenix Arn-Horn amazing on drums and didn’t miss a beat as well as providing great back up vocals.  Mercedes then talked about struggling with dark thoughts and said that their song Drowning was about this.

The band said that Signals blew their mind and thanked all the bands that supported them. Bassist Brandon Lockwood also put a lot of effort to his set and engaged with fans throughout which is fairly rare with a bass player.

Mercedes then said the theme of their latest album, Synesthesia, is about trying to be a part of someones life but its not going to happen so the key message was put your self first and be truth to yourself which was mainly what track Need Someone was about.

The band thanked everyone for keeping music alive in the city and the lead singer held hands with fans while performing. The music had a very synthesis feel to it which created a very awesome atmosphere.

Mercedes then got into the crowd and jumped with four or five fans, was really intimate as the last song was overcoming something really hard titled The year I Disappeared.

Overall it was an awesome night music and certainly showed girl power is well and truly alive in the world of rock.
