Interview: Deco’s Max Kendall talks new music, working with Shaun Williamson, TikTok, Summer Sessions and more!

Deco have become one of the UK’s most intriguing viral pop acts in recent years. With a persistent knack for classic songwriting, Deco blend the contemporary with their love of the 80s synth pop records thrust upon them by their parents growing up.

Like many artists, their ascent was threatened by the arrival of the pandemic, but this challenge and the need to adapt only accelerated their path to bigger things. ‘Winning the internet’ throughout lockdowns and beyond with millions of views for their viral 80s mashups, Deco truly embodied the sense of escapism they carry throughout their songwriting. They soon appeared on National TV & radio, played BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, supported the likes of Nile Rodgers, A-ha & Boy George on tour, garnered endorsements from their musical heroes (from Noel Gallagher to Coldplay) and won the hearts of millions on social media.

Deco’s popular saxophone anthem ‘Rain’, as heard on ‘Love Island’. was a real turning point for the band as they continued to make countless festival stages their own this summer, all while continuing to go viral across the world.

We managed to catch up with lead singer Max Kendall as he talked new music, working with Shaun Williamson, TikTok, Summer Sessions and more!
