Past The Fall talk ‘Poison Mirror’!

When did the initial idea for your latest single come together?

‘Poison Mirror’ was actually completed quite early on in the album writing process, but took quite a lot of time up front as its quite a dynamic song that has a lot of extremely different motifs in it.

How would you describe the track, to a reader that is unfamiliar with the band?

It’s a mid tempo, sonically dystopian take on modern interconnectivity through social media, that has spoken word, singing, screaming, light and dark parts and epic solos.

Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the track?

It’s about how the dark side of social media has led us to create a kind of ‘onstage ‘ persona, one that always presents the best possible view even though that is grossly unrealistic, which in turn is encouraged by others doing the same, until we’re all pretending to be versions of ourselves that aren’t real, which increases anxiety and disconnection.

How would you say that the track compares to anything you’ve done before?

It’s got a little bit of a story arc and covers a lot of ground emotionally and dynamically, so in that sense it feels more like a journey rather than a song, perhaps a touch prog haha!

What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?

Vocal wise we put a lot of effort into it rhythmically for the more aggressive parts and that was a lot of trial and error, and because it’s not such a standard song format so to speak and the arrangement we put a lot of conscious care into, and the outro is actually formed out of some live show improv before we recorded, so fusing all of that together into a natural flow was a cool change of lane.

Why should a reader check out the track?

Its got ambition and size and is damn heavy and talks about real stuff that’s affecting almost everyone of us today.

What else can you tell us about the track, that we haven’t covered in this interview?

It takes in multiple POV’s with the vocals, from a ringmaster to the revolt!
