Interview: River Knight

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

Mark: Our one and only album, “Grow”, has gone well, and our new single, “Unsprung” is also quite the hit with our fans.

Darren: Yeah, loads of streams, multiple saves, people seem to like it.

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

Darren: Hmmm, what doesn’t anyone know? We’ve done a few interviews promoting this song so we may have told every story about it hahaha.

Mark: Here’s something no one knows about the release. It was originally about 6 and a half minutes long and the finished release had multiple parts redone as we’d lost some recordings due to drunken errors.

Darren: We always tend to record after a few drinks hahaha.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Mark: This answer is always the same for me, and that’s Noel Gallagher. I’d love to have a jam with him, and conveniently he has a house near us.

Darren: I’ll agree with that. Noel on lead, me on rhythm and the three of us harmonising. I think that could turn out quite beautiful.

How has your latest release been received?

Mark: It’s been well received. To quote some of the reviews; “They are back on melodious form in their latest orchestral folk single, Unsprung, which borrows fractions of the melody to Take on Me, but with such a stunning orchestral string ensemble and hints of the Verve and 90s Britpop in the verses, who is complaining?

Darren: Or this one; “Poetic and open all at once, the song walks the line between the deeply personal, and that which is accessible on a broader level.

Mark: Or “It has a way of grabbing out at you and snagging your attention pretty quickly with the overall soundscape in general let alone the songwriting that keeps you afloat with the songs feel the entire time.

Darren: Those quotes are all from different reviews so I think we can confidently say it has been received well.

Mark: What’s weird about that first review quote is they mention Take On Me, but honestly we didn’t even give that song a thought.

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

Darren: This song is about how you can be at a place, mentally, whereby you’re broken, very negative, and just generally lost. But then, you meet someone who lights your day and gets you to see the positivity and beauty that is all around you.

Mark: I couldn’t have said it better. We do try to always have a positive message running through our songs, even when they start off negative.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

Mark: Tours? We’re doing a couple of small, non commercial festivals in April, and before that we’re returning to London in March.

Darren: We can’t say much about that one right now, but if anyone is interested please follow us on the old socials and you’ll soon have all the details.

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

Darren: We literally just played The Joiners on Saturday just gone. That was a blast. Playing on the same stage as so many great artists, it’s a well known stepping stone on the way to larger venues.

Mark: That was a great gig. We may be back there later in the year.

What else can we expect from you in 2022?

Mark: We’ll be doing the usual stuff. Rehearsing, writing, hopefully recording album number 2, and as always we’ll be playing as much as we can.

Darren: We’re thinking about turning River Knight into a full band, so you never know, that may happen.
