Face Your Fears

My friends, we meet again to shine a light on a menace in our society, domestic abuse. It has not gone away and neither does it show any signs of leaving. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus tackled this issue 17 years ago with their immense and impactive debut single ‘Face Down’ and here they return with a new version complete with orchestral segments. The string section brings a bittersweet aspect, like they are pulling on your heartstrings, vying for your attention.
This video ties the old with the new beautifully, showcasing the triggers and trauma, there is however room for emotion, passion and hope.
The pronouncement, the manner of Ronnie’s delivery, imparts an unsettling, painful account, in turn offering comfort and succour at a time of great fear and anxiety. The band align themselves with the victims, they play for the victims, they are there for the victims. They project a soothing countenance which is necessary, the mood is sombre, respectful, and moving, reminding us that this situation can happen to anyone. Hope is key here; we end on a positive note. The universal symbol for help is included to heighten the importance of being able to reach out.
Being familiar with the original I knew what was coming but then at 1.46 I held my breath until 2.55 – chills – is the only way to explain it, I think. A million thoughts crashed around my head; this is something you never get over.
This song is an anchor, it is the rope that has been thrown out to you so you can pull yourself back up, it is the hand to hold, grab it my friends, it is time to garner the strength and use it to forge a better way.
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus deserve the highest praise and honour for once again standing tall for those who are not able to.
