Natalie Evans Reflects On Post-Gig Highs On New Single ‘Driving Home Late’

Following a premiere with US tastemakers Under The Radar Magazine, London-based multi-instrumentalist virtuoso Natalie Evans is pleased to reveal her reflective new single ‘Driving Home Late’, which is released today, 4th May 2022, via Small Pond Records on all good digital service providers.

The track is the latest to be taken from her forthcoming new album Movements, which is set for release on 3rd June 2022 via Small Pond Records.

The record is available to preorder now on limited edition red 12” vinyl from: https://natalieevans.bandcamp.com/album/movements

Taking influence from Mitski, Julien Baker, and Alexis Taylor, the track is a bold statement from Evans and shows a more commercial, finely-tuned lo-fi pop edge to her writing than on previous releases.

Reflecting on moving to London a few years ago and trying to figure it all out in her twenties, Evans says of the single: “I was living in my friend’s loft room for a few months and it had those roof windows where you could see directly up into the sky which I found really inspiring. I wrote most of this song in one evening there, when I started laying down these simple piano chords and singing over them.”

“This song was very much a stream of consciousness. I was thinking about the importance of thinking things through during the day rather than always being distracted, so that I’m not kept awake at night by the bigger thoughts.”

“I was playing a lot of gigs at the time and I really love that feeling of going home afterwards when I feel accomplished and can just listen to the music and enjoy the drive. It’s one of the things that happen in my life where I am the most relaxed, content and in the moment.”

Forthcoming new album Movements was recorded in Hastings with producer Martin Ruffin who also worked on Evans’ previous releases, and was produced and mixed by Ruffin, and mastered by Aneek Thapar.

Earlier this year, previously-released album singles ‘Sun Song’/’To Go On’ and ‘Movie’ picked up press interest from Amazing Radio, Under The Radar Magazine, Alternative Nation, INSTRMNTL, Harp Column Magazine and more.

Evans has so far inspired comparisons with folk sensation and fellow harpist Joanna Newsom, while she reveals influence as a songwriter by artists such as Julien Baker, Moses Sumney, Peter Broderick and The Japanese House. She has played extensively in the UK including tours with Katie Malco, Bonniesongs and Gulfer, and alongside other established acts including Angelo De Augustine, AA Williams, Tricot, and Tera Melos.

As with previous material, her new songs continue to luxuriate in the vivid minutiae of life, channelling themes of nostalgia, the passing of time, and human connection with a poetic lightness of touch.

Natalie Evans will be performing at this year’s ArcTanGent Festival 2022, with further live appearances TBA.
