Album Review: Sea Girls – ‘Homesick’

Fast-growing indie icons Sea Girls’ latest album ‘Homesick’ has been released today on 18th March via Polydor Records!

The release of this album follows an already exciting start to the year for Sea Girls with numerous single releases and the announcement of their biggest headline tour yet, playing iconic venues such as London’s Alexandra Palace.

‘Homesick’ is a deeply personal record showcasing lead singer Henry Camamile’s journey back to his childhood home in Lincolnshire at the wake of the pandemic. Here he found himself having to address and reflect on events from his past, both good and bad. A cathartic process, this is expressed in the album to the absolute max through Henry’s astute storytelling and candid lyrics. Delving into some of his darkest moments, the uplifting album comes as a sense of relief, a gratefulness for survival.

The album begins with title track ‘Hometown’ and is all about just that! The electrifying riffs in the intro immediately hook you in, Sea `Girls are back and they aren’t messing around. Songs like this, ‘Sick’ and ‘Again Again’ are just made for the crowd to shout back, its anthemic songs like these that really make a tour and totally lift the album.

Latest single ‘Lonely’ made a sneak early appearance when Sea Girls added it in to their tour setlist later last year. Opening with a poignant whistle, this track is packed with more emotion than any other on the album. Discussing the single Henry said: “It was written the day Ennio Morricone died, so was initially in honour of him, a nod to the good, the bad and the ugly – hence the whistle and the line ‘OK Corral’

“It’s about the best friend I probably should have gone out with, but never did. We both moved on and the band happened, and life got in the way for the both of us.”

‘Someone’s Daughter’ is another stand out track with its explosive chorus and catchy riffs. This is the kind of song that makes you want to bop your head and sing along with a bit of attitude! The lyrics are punchy and there’s definitely a slight cathartic element to it, something which is repeated in ‘Paracetamol Blues’.

‘Higher’ has that classic Sea Girls sound that we are all so familiar with and is just an instant mood booster. The catchy chorus and buoyant rhythm make you want to whack this song on repeat. Henry’s candid lyrics really make an appearance in this track but that’s all part of the charm.

‘Homesick’ comes to a close with mellower tracks ‘Cute Guys’ and ‘Friends’, the perfect way to wind down. They really delivered with this album, it may not have been full of surprises, but they know what they can do and they do it well.
