Album Review: Miss Vincent – A Funeral For Youth

Youth Of Today

So, my friends we will now journey back in time to the 50’s and relive those golden days with the new record from Miss Vincent, our very own, home grown, doo-wap band. Those beats that drop, then hold for a second, only to tickle our heartstrings until they dissolve. A classic characteristic of the time, seen in many of the timeless tunes we go back to continually to quench our thirst for those bygone days.

Up first we have ‘Gravity’ a clean-cut tune, from these fresh-faced and youthful lads that sees this record through, melodies that warm your insides and soothe your burnt- out bodies. It is always lovely to hear new music, this is incredibly beautiful and one of those albums you listen to in its entirety.  With Alex Marshall at the helm with his golden tonsils and dulcet tones, Owain Mainwaring on bass, Nate Davenport on drums and Lawrie Pattison on guitar, the songs continue to flow, coherently and poetically.

I love the aesthetic here, nostalgia combined effectively with a modern sound and attitude, the videos are mini films that include old black and white movie clips to increase and maintain the interest. With nods and winks to the horror punk ethic, there is plenty to get excited about, I would even say it’s not just song after song here, it is hit after hit, an absolute joy to behold! ‘Doctors and Churches’ has a very groovy ‘The Munsters/ Addams Family’ crypt riff that brings a little fun and familiarity to the table, it’s time to get ‘Carried Away’ or ‘Go It Alone’ whichever you choose, make sure this is your soundtrack. The video for ‘The Lovers’ is very FFAF ‘Escape Artists Never Die’ very stylish and expertly crafted. We move on to the Therapy? tinged chugging frets of ‘Heresy’ with its biting lyrics ‘no one walks the earth that has not sinned’ and take comfort in the knowledge of how true those words are. There is plenty of layering, sumptuous harmonies and huge choruses and delicately placed twists and turns in the arrangements that elevate this record to the most righteous and lofty heights.

Like a packet of chocolate biscuits that you must finish, like a multi-pack of crisps that you must never leave unattended – if you miss this, it’s your funeral.
