Single Review: Tom Lumley & The Brave Liaison – Better Than This

Zero hesitation and instant power. There is none of the ‘usual’ creping power with Tom Lumley & The Brave Liaison’s latest single, ‘Better Than This’.

It is a direct middle finger to the ‘that’s life’ kind of attitude seen throughout our society that seems to rule the politically minded world. A ‘kick the door down’, no-nonsense attitude to become the change we want to see and fight for what is right.

‘Better Than This’ is very much ruled by the guitar which is exactly what it needed to be. The vocals add the illustration and explanation, but the passion and intensity are fuelled with raw grit and electricity.

Sparking through the single, this powerful declaration certainly builds momentum, igniting a powerhouse of deep-rooted passion and searing sound.

The band added on the single: “‘Better Than This’ is an anthem for a generation unheard and uncatered for by the organisations of power, not only in the U.K. but around the world.

“A soundtrack to the current movement of youth who are tired of being ignored, patronised and used as a scapegoat.

“This song is a powerful declaration that we’ll no longer be ignored and refused a seat at the table which decides our futures.”

Rightly so. It is hard to argue with especially after a listen to the sonic manifesto. The music video isn’t much softer either, flashing images of police brutality and the fallen statues from the Black Lives Matter movement.

Rocking through every riff and drum crash then paining it red. There is no uncertainty from the band who jump headfirst into the politically motivated single with so much certainty that it is hard not to do the same

The band have supported the likes of Sam Fender and The Hunna and have played festivals such as the Isle of Wight, Bestival, Camden Rocks, and Tramlines. ‘Better Than This’ has also gained attention from Hue Stephens on Radio 1, Radio X and have been Amazing Radio playlisted.
