Album Review: SCARLET – Obey The Queen

Swedish Metal queen SCARLET is releasing her debut album ‘Obey The Queen’ on 13th November!

The album was written mostly alone at her home in Sweden, and each song portrays a time or situation of change in her life – giving it that personal edge.

SCARLET makes one hell of an entrance with opening title track ‘Obey The Queen’. Its empowering spoken word intro makes for a really atmospheric listen before crashing in to the rest of the song. Her punchy vocals and the thumping beat make it a truly solid way to kickstart the album.

This kind of in-your-face sound is continued in to the ferocious ‘Ugly Fucker’, a song raging about receiving unsolicited nudes. It is full to the brim with attack and shows SCARLET is not someone to get on the wrong side of! This vicious sound is continued in to ‘#bossbitch’, a dedication to female oppression in the workplace, before toning it down in the delicate ‘Love heroin’.

‘Krokodil’ and ‘Devil Twins’ are both relentlessly creepy. They’re hard-hitting and gruesome, making you completely stop in your tracks. With every new song on this album, a completely unexpected sound is heard and it is this level of unpredictability that takes ‘Obey The Queen’ to a whole new level.

Closing the album on quite a solemn note is ‘Final Shot’. It is much more stripped back than the rest of the album and really highlights SCARLET’s immensely powerful vocals, more so than in the other tracks. This song leaves a lasting impression and is a nice step back from the hardcore vibe of ‘Obey The Queen’ as a whole. It is an album filled with passion and a vast mix of emotions, prepare yourself to be stunned!
