Scotland’s lovechild of Blink 182 and Green Day, melodic pop punk band Single By Sunday have been going from strength to strength touring extensively for the last 18 months, with US college tours booked and their last UK tour in January selling out 4 out of 5 dates played.
Their upbeat/energetic live shows, featuring raucous guitars and undeniably catchy hooks, show an invigorating take on classic pop-punk from the early 00s but with their own unique twists. New single ‘Debbie’, a track that proves online shopping is not always as it should be, develops their sound further with explosive 80’s pop funky bass and synths making way for the band’s heavy chugging riffs.
“What should have been a simple purchase of a pair of jeans turned out to be a ‘nod your head bop of a tune’. The short story is Jonny tried to buy some jeans and got ripped off!” Explain Single By Sunday. The band consists of lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Josh Ladds, backing vocalist/lead guitarist Jonny Eakins, & bassist Jack Black who all met at school and music college, with drummer James Madison joining midway through 2019.
Since releasing their debut EP, ‘Get Up, Get Out’ in 2015, they have gone on to release subsequent EPs; ‘Atom Bomb’, ‘Watch Out World’ and ‘Punk U’. They have also released four singles; ‘Romeo’, ‘Dear John’, the thought-provoking charity single ‘Say What (You Want)’, plus a cover of Busted’s classic pop-punk anthem ‘Year 3000’ which has hit over 100 thousand Spotify streams.
Bridging the gap between The 1975 and Owl City, ‘Debbie’ blends Single By Sunday’s awesome brand of cheeky punk juvenilia with impassioned melodies. It’s an exciting new move for the band, with catchy flecks of a school prom sense of nostalgia. The accompanying video (coming Tuesday 31st March) flickers from heartfelt sepia tones to bursts of the band’s trademark vibrant blue, red, yellow and purple hair colours and results in a chaotic feel-good fan takeover.
With a UK tour on the horizon later this year and ‘Debbie’ set to smash up the internet and airwaves, Single By Sunday continue to flourish with their in-your-face style and infectious ability to get a crowd going nuts. The band are also playing two free shows to celebrate the single release; Glasgow’s Cathouse on 9th May which sold out within an hour of tickets going on sale and The New Cross Inn, London on May 17th. The first 100 people in the queue for the London show will get special VIP access!
