Album Review: Silverstein – A Beautiful Place to Drown

Silverstein are preparing to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band, and what better way to do that than with a new album?! The band will be releasing their 9th studio album: ‘A Beautiful Place To Drown’ on 6th March, and it features appearances from Aaron Gillespie (Underoath), Caleb Shomo (Beartooth), Pierre Bouvier (Simple Plan) and Princess Nokia! The album encapsulates the best of Silverstein while pushing their infamous sound in to daring new territories!

The album gets off to a blistering start with opening track ‘Bad Habits (feat. Intervals)’! The prominent bassline in the introduction mixed with the intense progression of the song highlights Silverstein’s signature blend of aggression and melody, along with a mesmerising guitar solo from Intervals’ Aaron Marshall. This track deals with the feelings of defeat that can come from trying to overcome your demons and takes place in that slither of daylight between recognition and regret. Deep meanings aside, this track kickstarts the party that is ‘A Beautiful Place To Drown’.

Following this track is ‘Burn It Down (feat. Caleb Shomo)’. Its crashing start and fast paced rhythm throughout means this song really gets your pulse racing! The searing guitar combined with the frustrated lyrics pays the perfect homage to Silverstein’s emo/punk roots, a perfect way to celebrate their musical journey.

‘Where Are You’ is a particularly gripping track with its distorted introduction and dramatic vocals. It really travels the spectrum between pop punk and rock, making it an enthralling listen, similar to the following track ‘Infinite (feat. Aaron Gillespie), with its punchy vocals and underlying mystical tone.

‘Shape Shift’ and ‘All On Me’ initially take on much more mellow sounds than their predecessors, however they soon burst in to the upbeat tunes that we’re so familiar with. They come across as much more powerful tracks while still maintaining the band’s trademark intimacy.

Silverstein conclude ‘A Beautiful Place To Drown’ with ‘Take What You Give (feat. Pierre Bouvier)’, a light, feel-good track. This is a perfect way to conclude such a thrilling album, and leaves the listener on a high. It is the kind of song that you desperately want to hear live, this is a classic ‘bouncing around your room’ kind of song!

Throughout their careers and the making of this album, Silverstein have always managed to push themselves both musically and lyrically. They have explored the mental duress that seems to be inextricable from the societal and personal challenges of modern life, thus creating a moving yet electrifying album!
