Single Review and Poem: Ozzy Osbourne – Under The Graveyard

Aston Pride

Around the corner from me used to live Ozzy Osbourne, it’s where he grew up, played, went to school, exactly the same as me. I’ve never met him but feel a  deep affinity and sense of belonging and family whenever I hear his name or that of Black Sabbath. After some time away from recording my friends, the original Prince Of Darkness has returned with a blistering new song called ‘Under The Graveyard’, it features Duff McKagan( G ‘N R) and Chad Smith(RHCP) and is quite extraordinary in its concept and grasp. Aurally it is what you would expect, Ozzy sounds incredible, clear, poised and well honed. It bears the stark reminder that ‘ we all die alone’ and it holds us under water with the constant struggle of life and the misery it hands out in generous portions. The mega riff at 3.28 seals the deal .He is an artist that never ceases to amaze and illuminate my world and the wider musical landscape. He has influenced thousands with his art, a legacy that is difficult to match, let alone beat. Made in Birmingham, you can thank me later.

I am just an ordinary fan, to his ordinary man.

The Other Side

A shot in the dark

That was heard around the world,

Speaking to the devil

Brought me down to earth.

Seeking out a miracle man

So, tomorrow would have some worth.

I didn’t want to walk on water

That train departed long ago

Taking everything that’s crazy

In the darkness I’m still waiting

For what exactly I don’t know.

There’s no rest for the wicked

Those who bark at the moon

Under the spell of a demon

You got sucked in when you spoke to soon.

Residing in the bottle

It’s a bottle you know so well

Searching for a solution

When there’s nothing left to tell.

But now our idyll suffers so

Our paradise is tired

It is a road that leads to nowhere

Its sparkle has expired.

A madman in hot pursuit

Armed and ready to shoot

If suicide is a sin too far

There’ll be no more tears for you.

We struggle far and wide

We travel through the night,

And steal away at a time like this

Through the black rain and the blizzard’s kiss,

I see you’re no different

But ultimately

It’s time for me to return,

I’m coming home mama

Please forgive your wayward son.

Said goodbye to his romance,

No second chance but now

Over the mountain and on the other side

I’ll see you then I’ll close my eyes,

Forever

Make no bones about it,

Under the graveyard I’d never doubt it,

I never said I was extraordinary

A flash in the pan

A one-night stand

See me as I see me

Just an ordinary man.
