Album Review: DMA’S – MTV Unplugged Live Session

Down Under Melodies Abound

Complete with audience appreciation, here we have DMA’S MTV Unplugged session, it’s time to do away with all the faff, fuss and glittering façade of the music business and let’s lay it on the line, my friends, the question is do you have the courage and the constitution to do so?

From the other side of the world our Australian cousins bring us a performance full to the brim of raw talent that is the backbone of any artist deserving of recognition and high praise.

Sit back folks, press play and unwind to this soothing, therapeutic and utterly joyous offering, it is magnetic, hypnotic and dignified.

We begin with ‘Feels Like 37’ and stroll along coolly and calmly to the sound of serenity, devoid of embellishment that is typical of  these Unplugged recordings.

The dreaminess continues in ‘Lay Down’ with

‘my friend was found lost in worlds far away’.

An elegant violin piece in ‘Emily Whyte’ exudes a passion, a longing and a belonging that we all crave as we sing

‘where will you be when my heart’s still breaking from ‘In The Air’.

Bathe in the delight of the golden tonsils of our friend Tommy O’Dell as he tackles ‘Beautiful Stranger’ a song that I wasn’t fond of when it was released originally, but somehow this version packs more charisma and charm.

There is a natural beauty here; evocative of an awe-inspiring coastline, waves gently lulling on the shore, a blue sky kissing the sea, a sensitivity that is welcomed, lovingly embraced and unequivocally reciprocated by the listener.

“The End” provides the kick in the teeth lyric

‘and I just can’t describe how I got so cold’

There are life lessons a-plenty on this record, its approach is quite different; capturing the glorious and not so glorious aspects of human emotion and condition.

Our ‘Health’ is discussed here as we ‘Step Up The Morphine’ before we ‘Delete’ ourselves from this world, however, one question remains

‘Do I Need You Now?’

Open up, open up my friends, come in from the rain and settle down with dis mad album.

Heartbreakingly perfect.
