Interview: Bend Sinister talk latest single

Heard It All Before is a bit of a cynic’s anthem, but really it’s the feeling we all get any time some dingbat comes to your door trying to sell you a better version of an alarm clock. Or maybe it’s about relationships or something.

Bend Sinister have been labeled everything from math to prog to pop but they feel most comfortable in the plain guise of rock. They have evolved through numerous styles and absorbed a plethora of influences to become a band so refreshingly original that people are still struggling to categorize them after 12 years.

Hot on the heels of our The Other Way EP, featuring the alt-rock top 40 single Walk the Other Way, Ben Sinister are serving up their new single Heard It All Before ahead of our full-length record Foolish Games, set for release May 2018.

We managed to catch up with vocalist Dan Moxon who talked about the band’s latest release and more!

So how hs the release of Heard It All Before gone down so far?

We’re pretty early on, but we’re excited to be putting out a new album and share this first song. The video for it was particularly fun and we did it all while driving to gigs in our van

Can you tell us something about the release that no one else knows?

This new album is the first that we’ve ever self produced. We figured that we knew by now what sort of sounds and tones we wanted and as long as we had some incredibly talented engineers helping we could steer the ship

Would you say this is different to your previous releases on The Other Way?

I think this album is really a continuation of the direction we were headed with ‘the other way’. A lot of the songs were written around the same period and it was just a matter of finishing lyrics/arrangements and a little spit and polish

If you could work with any band on a new track, who would it be and why?

If I could work with anyone I’d probably try to do some songwriting with Paul McCartney before he leaves this world. He is a living legend. If it was a more modern choice, perhaps a collaboration with St. Vincent. She’s super talented and I think it would be interesting

Will you be touring at all in 2018 or any festivals planned?

We have some plans down the pipeline and offers coming in. I think we’ll be doing July 1st Vancouver jazz fest and tentatively a Trip our to Toronto in the fall.

What’s the alternative scene like in Vancouver at the moment?

Vancouver has lots of new bands coming up all the time, it’s sometimes hard to keep track. I think people struggle to find venues to play but there’s lots of options if your willing to self promote the shows at halls or a few dive bars. Brass camel is a super sweet band!

What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

I work on restoring and selling vintage mid century modern furniture and decor.

What was the first gig you ever attended?

The first gig I went to was probably a local show in Kelowna with metal bands.. none of which have stood the test of time. Though Kevin Keegan played in one and he now fronts Dead Quiet. Darcy Hancock of ladyhawk was in one too and he now plays with Louis burns.
