Live Review: Energy at Bournemouth’s Anvil

Energy

Energy – They say sound is a movement of energy and boy did the audience move tonight at the Anvil Bournemouth – By Zo Marchment.

The atmosphere of pop punk vibrations that bounced around the small but personal venue of Bournemouth’s local haunt the Anvil was truly electrifying to watch and the band have sparked a lot of interest through their social media video diaries of the UK tour.

The style of music, in my opinion, was blended with an emo / horror punk vibe that gave Energy a true edge likens to bands such as the famous Misfits AFI and Black Sabbath. Like a young Ozzy in the making, Jason engaged the audience making them laugh and cheer with admiration as Energy put on a truly spectacular performance starting with Witching Hour and ending with They from their album Apparition Sound. I myself, who is a hardcore Metalcore fan who enjoys bands such as Bury Tomorrow (who have sold out a matinee and evening show at the same venue in record time, for later this year), was well and truly amazed at the brilliance of the show and definitely not one to be missed. The punk kid inside of me was truly in bliss watching Energy and nostalgia rained through my body as I heard Energy’s song Boyfriend which rung similar to bands such as Blink 182, Sum 41 having that 00’s skater punk vibe.

At the start of the night Energy had supports such as:

Miss Misery who are a local Andover based band and lovely guys, playing tracks such as Street Lights, Agenda and Poison Roots. Front man Jack Hartwell got the crowd warmed up for the oncoming bands and they sounded similar to Neck Deep, AFI and Creeper.

Miseria Hallows followed on who are another local support based in Bournemouth. Miseria Hallows have undertones of the Grungy Emo Rock and an essence of Dark punk/ Horror punk genre like bands such as Misfits, InMe & Calabrese. Front man Alexz “Deadface” Allen and band mates entered the stage for their first live show as a band, in gothic black make up which set the mood for their awesome performance that followed. They played a range of their songs such as, Welcome to the Hell Mouth, Goodbye Sweet Death and covers from Turbonegro All my friends are dead, Dig Up Your Bones by the Misfits and also cover from the late Chester’s band Linkin Park, One Step Closer. which was a real tribute.

Miss Vincent

Miss Vincent who are a Southampton based band put on an outstanding show, they are likened to Blink 182 / AFI / Fallout boy mix. Watching the audience bounce and sing along to the polite Alex Marshall who was very friendly to meet when I asked for a cheeky snap. The fast-passed punk beats and vocal harmonies made me feel like I was watching Punk bands from my childhood. Alex informed the audience that their profits from the merch sold on tour were going to the charity MIND. MIND provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem, this charity means a lot to me personally, so for them to say that on stage won me straight away. Starting off with Cold Hands and finishing on Blame, they blew me away with a super set. My favourites of the night being Beauty and Shotgun which gave me an essence of My Chemical Romance.
Overall my opinion is the bands who played the Anvil at the Energy Gig are an ideal recommend for any pop punk scene kid of 2K17.

We grabbed Jason Tankerley aka TANK for a cheeky interview in between the supports:

(Said interview was filmed however, with it being a punk show my phone decided that was the time to be rebellious and not save! When reading this interview just picture a lovely sunny evening in Bournemouth outside the back of the venue, in front of a lovely industrial grey shipping container…very down with the kids or check out the pic below)

Who’s the messy one on tour?

Jason – ‘Me!! My partner who does our photography on tour and cleans up after me everywhere!!’.

What hidden talents would you say you have?

Jason – ‘My hidden talent?… Voice acting, I can do a few voice overs.’
Me – ‘Would you do one for us?’
Jason – ‘No it’s hidden…’

If you weren’t in the band what did you always want to be?

Jason – ‘As before Voice Acting or going down the modelling route’

What’s the difference between UK and USA audience?

Jason – ‘There is such a difference! Like in the UK you’re all accepting of new music and bands, you turn up on tour and the audience is there ready and waiting for you. Whereas in the USA they’re reluctant to give you a break, it’s a much bigger country and everyone is set in their ways. They go to see a band they want too and anything else it’s like …who are you??’

Pro Trump or dump Trump?

Jason – ‘I’ve been told not to answer any political questions… Do you think he’ll like me?’
Me – ‘I don’t think Trump likes anyone…’
Jason – ‘I don’t like people who don’t like me.’
Me – ‘Well, I like you’

What band would you desire to always play alongside with?

Jason – ‘I would love to play alongside with Glenn Danzig from the Misfits! The likes of AFI, Bad Religion…ohhh and Sabbath!’

What / who was your inspiration when you started off?

Jason- ‘Ever since I was 12 I’ve always enjoyed singing, with inspirations of legends such as Peter Gabriel from Genesis as I started out in a choir. I would say later when growing up, it became bands such as nirvana, rancid and the misfits as we sound similar to the misfits. However, then I heard Ozzy’s voice and I was stunned like I thought to myself he sings in my particular range finally!! So definitely Sabbath’
