Interview: Earl Grey talk latest EP

Hailing from Mönchengladbach, Germany, Earl Grey were founded just a couple of years ago and have so far released two EPs (Ready to Leave & Passing Time). Shortly after releasing that debut EP, Earl Grey toured the UK and Europe, fast building an interest and popularity for their cathartic, passionate live shows. The band followed this with an ambitious tour of Eastern Europe involving 21 shows in 7 countries (and more than 8000km of driving).

With all this experience (and driving!) behind them the band teamed up with producer Sean Duddy (from hardcore Copenhagen band, Woes) to record their third EP, The Times You Cross My Mind. out now!

TTYCMM was mastered by Seb Barlow (Neck Deep, As It Is, WSTR) who gave the EP it’s finishing touch. After finally finding their sound, Earl Grey look forward to sharing their new material with you and are ready to go places they’ve never been to before. Anthemic, aggressive and melodic in equal measures, this is their biggest statement yet. Check out Nothing below!

We managed to catch up with the guys before their EP was released.

How has the release of Nothing gone down so far with fans?

The responses we got for Nothing were pretty good. A lot of people messaged us saying they liked the song which was pretty cool!

Tell us something about the single that no one knows?

The lyrics were written by Lukas and Tristan. Lukas wrote the first part, Tristan the ending. They both wrote lyrics when all the Instruments were set and then combined both versions even though they were slightly different.

Can you tell us anything about the upcoming EP ‘The Times You Cross My Mind’?

We think The Times You Cross My Mind is the release that represents EARL GREY the best.

Would you say this is kind of different to your previous releases?

We took more time to write the songs and made demo recordings in our rehearsal room. During that time our sound changed more into a 90’s kinda vibe with more melodies and details.

What was it like working with Seb Barlow knowing he has helped so many big bands with their releases?

Sean (Duddy, who recorded and mixed the EP) introduced us to Seb after he was done mixing our EP and we started talking to him. He had a lot of great ideas and converted them into the songs. We actually never met Seb but he’s always been super nice and chill. We’d work with him anytime again.

His style is more pop punk, would you say you’re going that way with the new EP?

TTYCMM has a pretty dominant pop punk vibe to it but we think we drifted further away from it than with our previous releases. We spiced it up a little and it got darker and more dreamy. It still has a kick ass punch to it though.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Blink-182. No further explanation needed.

What’s the funniest moment while recording the EP?

We had to change rooms multiple times because of a faulty circuit. We also had to hold our instruments in a specific direction to avoid it. It was outrageous.

What’s the alternative music scene like in Germany at the moment?

It’s a nightmare.
