Interview: Stupid Karate talks latest EP

Stupid Karate are four piece band from Lille (France) playing fast songs. Their first EP was released in October 2016 just a few weeks after we started playing together. Punk is a free pricing corpse is the band’s second EP, it was recorded in February this year  at BBK studio and mixed / mastered by Simon Herbaut. Stupid Karate defines themselves as a punk band even if punk is dead with Diogene de Sinope.

Stupid Karate is Denis on bass, Théo on vocals, Harald on guitar and drummer Mathieu.

We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about their latest EP and more!

How has the release of ‘Punk is a free pricing corpse’ gone so far?
Pretty great ! We didn’t expect anything with this release except playing some shows. We did about 20 gigs since January in France and Belgium, it was really cool. We played with some great bands (The Real Kids, Butcher Baby, Anchord, Ed Warner, Jodie Faster…) and drank some great beers. We’re lucky !

Tell us about the EP
It was composed and recorded real quick. We wanted to make a faster and tougher EP than the first one and I hope you can hear it !

What is your favourite track from this release?
I really like “Embrace my O-Goshi”. I think that this song defines the band : there are grind, punk and hardcore parts in only one minute and a half. It’s sometimes fast, sometimes dumb. It’s us ! Also there are samples of one of the greatest video game ever : NBA Jam.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why ?
Tough question ! We love so many bands it’s really difficult to pick up only one. We are huge fans of Cursed, Napalm Death, Doomriders, Mastodon or Bad Religion but if we have to pick only one it would be Limp Wrist. Limp Wrist is the reason why Stupid Karate exists : it’s fast and fun, it’s perfect !

What has been your funniest moment recording the EP?
You know, we recorded it in two days so it was too short to have a lot of fun facts to tell you BUT… At the end of the recording session, we decided to play some synthesiser and we really enjoyed it !

What’s the punk scene like in France at the moment ?
There are a lot of great bands here : The Boring, Jodie Faster, Heavy Heart, The Decline, Sordid Ship, Tromatized Youth, Mon Autre Groupe, Ta Gueule, Syndrome 81, Coupe Gorge, Rixe, Youth Avoiders, Hightower, Sport… You really need to listen to them !

Will you be touring in the UK or Europe this year ?
I hope so ! At the end of 2017 or early 2018 we’ll try to play abroad in a short tour. It would be very cool to play in the UK. Book us !

What was your first gig that you ever went to ?
When I was a teenager, with my dad, I saw Tina Turner in a huge arena. It was my first gig ever. A few months later I saw Slayer and Biohazard in Paris, one of the greatest show I ever saw !
