London-based singer-songwriter Scott Dean has released The City Falls, the new single from his stunning 2016 album Neon. The atmospheric piece of widescreen alt rock showcases his emotive vocals, soaring guitars and arrives with a cinematic new video. A musician since picking up his first guitar at ten years old, Scott’s early musical development was heavily influenced by virtuoso guitarists Joe Satriani & Gary Moore & led to him recording his first songs at the tender age of fifteen. Following this, he expanded his musical toolkit with spells in various grunge & rock-influenced bands before moving to London in his early twenties. Working as a professional composer for TV & the video game industry & finding fresh inspiration in the city’s vibrant open mic scene, Scott decided to refocus on his solo work as a vocalist and singer-songwriter able to craft hook-laden songs across guitar, piano & keyboards. The album Neon is his first official release, and is a strong set of diverse songs from a versatile musician. Check out The City Falls below!

We managed to catch up with Scott as he talks about the latest single, gigs, fans and more!

How has the video for The City Falls gone down?
The video has gone down with such a great response.  I’ve had lots of social media engagement and many people have shared the video on FB.  I think this is a key factor now and very important with where the music industry is right now.  We’ve managed to gain many reviews from magazines and some good radio play.  The song is being heard and the video is being watched.  I’m very excited!
Tell us about the meaning of the song
The song was inspired by “The Dark Knight Rises.”  Such a great film and another way I get inspiration to write.  This film in particular lead me to sitting with an acoustic in front of the TV and coming up with the verse and chorus chord progression.  The lyrics portray a dark force/being/spirit over taking a city and causing chaos and destruction.  The people are calling out for a hero.  “Another night meets another day in vain” A shadow falls, it will vanish in time”. These are the opening lyrics that set the scene/mood.
What is your favourite song from the album Neon?
That’s a super hard question.  I honestly can say, hand on heart, all of them!  That isn’t an answer with ego at all!  This is the first album/ep or collection of tracks that I have sat down and said “if at any point I get bored during the track or lose the feel, it’s not making it on the album”  Gareth and I were very cut throat with every track.  I spent months and months on the lyrics, takes, mixes and vocal melodies.  In twenty yearsof recording this is the best I could create and put my heart and soul into it.  Every track is special to me and has an important story and inspiration.
Will there be a tour soon?
No tour as such but i’m always actively gigging in the UK, mainly London.  I perform tracks off the album stripped down with just vocal and guitar.
What’s next? Will there be a new album this year?
I can’t plan an album,  the last one came from nowhere.  I had two years off writing and gigging, then all of a sudden The City Falls appeared and led to the full album “Neon”.
How much do your fans mean to you?
Each and every fan is probably the most important aspect of it all.  Who would I be able to share my music with and who would listen to what has been created? I love the fact that I can chat to people who listen to my music personally through FB, Twitter etc and interact personally.
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
I have so many influences band wise and there are too many to pick.  This would probably have to be the shortlist:
Radiohead
My Vitriol
Feeder
Jimmy Eat World
Counting Crows
Would you say the music scene in London is the best in the UK right now?
I thought it was the place to be and still do!  I moved here when I was 25 and remember playing an open mic night most nights for almost a year!  I loved it!  You can never get bored in London and there are so many music venues to play at and endless amount of talented artists and bands!
