Interview: The Wild Things

the-wild-things

The Wild Things  is a stunning four-piece alternative rock band from West London. A sister-brother team Sydney and Cameron White, Rob Kendrick and Pete Wheeler.

Formed in the basement of a castle, they quickly established themselves on the London music scene with the release of their debut EP – You Know That New Sound You’ve Been Looking For?. In 2015 they toured the US extensively, all the while writing for their next project. The band’s work is created in-house, from writing and producing their own material to creating their music videos and managing their own art direction. Their latest releases were produced by Cameron and engineered / mixed by by Adrian Hall (Ray Davies, Honeyblood) in their home studio.

It was in Los Angeles that their next single The Devil’s Witness was written – a bluesy rock stomper that really pushes the next stage of the bands evolution. The new album titled The Devil’s Witness will be released on 27th October.

Alongside the band, Rob Kendrick and Sydney White are accomplished actors. Sydney best known for her acting work in BBC’s Uncle & Young Dracula, whereas Rob for Sky 1’s After Hours and BBC’s The Syndicate.

Championed by luminaries such as Pete Townshend and Dave Stewart. ‘The Wild Things’ are quickly gaining a reputation on the live-circuit as one of the leading lights in modern rock. A band not to be missed.

We managed to catch up with Sydney as she talked about acting, the new album, fans and more!

How different is it performing in a band to acting?

The main difference, and the true beauty of performing in a band is you can just lay however you are feeling out on the stage. There’s no waiting to be told if you have the job, no downtime between setups, you can just let rip and lose yourself. Feeling mad? Write a mad song. Feeling romantic? Write a romantic song… Plus you get to do it with your best mates!

Is this what you want to do now or will yous still be acting alongside it?

The two are a part of me now. You can’t have one without the other! The acting has given me an ease of performing that makes it so much fun to be onstage, and the music has allowed me to tap into emotions I may not have been able to find otherwise.

Are you looking forward to the release of the Devil’s Witness?

I can’t wait. We’re constantly writing, creating, throwing new tracks into the set… It’s so exciting to me to get to create this work and then send it out to the universe.

What inspired you to write this album?

Every track has a different process, that’s why we work so well as a band. Sometimes me or Rob with have a lyric, or an image, or a movie that defines our route, other times Cam can come in with a riff or even a full song that’s so textured the words just sort of tumble out.

Is this any different to your previous EP?

Every band develops from record to record, and it’s really fun for me to be in the hot seat for that process. We can’t wait for people to hear what’s coming. The guys have performed really really well!

How much do your fans mean to you guys?

For us? Fans are everything… but ‘fans’ makes it seem like there’s a divide between us and them. They’re just our mates online. We write every song and do every show in the hope that people will get in touch, say what it means to them or even just have a beer with us.

If you could work with any band on a album, who would it be and why?

Ooh, that’s a tough one… It’s not necessarily a band, it’s a producer/mixer/studio… Though if you ask Cam it’ll always be Brain Wilson in sunny LA!

What is your proudest moment to date?

Our proudest moment? Seeing how the work we’re doing is expanding the people we can reach. The summer bawl is really picking up speed, the reaction to our latest work flattens me every day… I’m gonna say our proudest moment to date is yet to come!
