LET THEM EAT CAKE
(Roulette Records)
8/10
Indie trio LiVES returns to the studio to deliver the antagonistic drop-kick to the b*ll*cks of mid-life WTF is going on, self-awareness. Opener ‘Cancelled’ rages against offence, toxic social media and the woe-is-me malaise that seems to have flooded many of our attitudes and beliefs. The song kicks the mainstream frightened back door while dropping the perfect lyric, “I fucking hate how lame we’ve all become”, set against an aggressive nineties tune. A gentle, more measured riff ushers in ‘Come Together’ before the lyrics sit alone, red-eyed and confused in the student union bar at closing time before the chorus sweeps in to rescue and resuscitate.
The infectious tunes shake at the cooler as ‘Is This What You Want’ and a keyboard warrior bashing ‘What A Way’ shimmy into view. The laconically spat-out title track ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ volleys cans down the TFI theme tune street before the conforming chugging riff on ‘Already Dead’ explodes into life before returning to its funeralastic middle of the Indie road resonance. The final two-part ‘Hope and Freedom’ wouldn’t be out of place in a Hangover movie, the morning after the night before the trashed hotel suite scene. LiVES has dropped seven full-blooded anthems with lyrics for today and a gloriously more-ish nineties backbeat cradling the razor-sharp poetry. It works.
