Interview with Doug Kistner of Studio D’Lux

Thanks for taking the time, Doug.  We know you’re a busy guy!  The new
stuff from Studio D’lux is killer!  How do you feel that making classic
rock in the 2020s translates to the listening audience?  Who is your
fanbase?

Thanks for the compliment. Im trying trying to find my audience. I mean,
I know the audience is older and fans of bands like Toto, Doobies,
Chicago etc will probably like the way this stuff sounds. Plus we have
fantasic players that they may know on it. We just gotta get it out
there, not easy.

You’ve obviously been influenced by some of the greats that you have
playing on this project.  Is it intimidating to be making music with
people you’ve admired?  How did you even approach them to play on your
stuff?

Not intimidating at all once youre talking about the music. All the guys
liked what they heard from the basic tracks. But at first, asking them
if they would be interested, yea that was a little intimidating. Some of
these guys i didnt know at all. Liberty and Bill were very encouraging
when we were recording the first one.

Which song on your upcoming EP is your favorite, and why?

Depends on the day, right? I think the end section of Light Still Shines
is the most exciting moment. And all of the sections in that song are
different but they really flow in and out of each other really nicely.
Aint Good Enough sounds like a pop rock radio song to me and there s a
couple Steely Dan type chords thrown in there subtly.

Any plans to turn this into a full album-length project?  Any
touring/live dates?

No plans for album. I could never write that many songs. And really, I
dont think people have the attention span to listen to an album anymore.
Thats all we used to do was listen to albums! Im just going to hopefully
continue putting out music as Studio D’lux, which can ideally feature
the same guys or different guys.
But playing live is something i hope we can do. I think there could be
opportunities for us to be an opening act. Who would be in the band, im
not sure about any of that yet tho.

If you could put together a tour, with Studio D’lux being one band, what
other bands would you want to share the stage with?

Well it depends. I mean if we have Champlin and Liberty and any one of
those guitar players, there are lots of possibilities i would think. I
dont wanna really say who.

Is there one song that is a personal favorite, not of yours, that you
wish that you would have written, and why?

Oh, there s way too many to even mention.

What’s next, Doug?

We have to just get the ep out and hopefully reach alot more people.
Aint Good Enough got 80, 000 views on youtube which is not bad. But i
think Spotify is going to better now that there are more songs by Studio
D’lux on there to feed off.

Thanks so much for your time!  We can’t wait to hear more from Studio
D’lux!!

Thank you. I really appreciate it.
