Interview: Picnic Lightning

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

We hope they’re diggin’ it. Shout out to our biggest fans, John’s parents! Overall, the feedback we’ve had is great, the streaming and purchase numbers are solid, radio play and playlist adds are consistent, so we’re going to call it a success.

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

A keen ear has probably already caught this, but it’s our only song (so far) where Cole and Thomas both sing a lead part; they exchange lines in the verses. Usually Thomas takes lead, with Cole & Cam on the harmonies, and all 4 of us on the gang vocals, but this is a bit of departure from that formula.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

It’s tempting to pick a band that’s been an influence on us (Radiohead, Arcade Fire, etc) but it would be pretty cool to collaborate with Wet Leg or Phoebe Bridgers where we could accentuate their heavier side, and they could help bring out our chiller side. Some cool things could happen in that balance, and their similar sensibilities would probably make collaboration pretty enjoyable.

How has your latest release been received?

We’ve had a great response to the two new singles. Our latest, Six Feet Under, has seen quite a bit of radio play, and been added to a few playlists (New Rock Songs, & Rock Generation). It’s still only a few weeks young, so we’re excited about the momentum. It’s preceded by Over My Head, which has had a similar response. You can spin them both here: Spotify

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

Our latest track considers what one thinks mid-burial and assumes they would hope to have lived well; to have made an effort to destroy their enemies. But living well doesn’t mean being well and societies definition of wellness is decidedly opposed to how we will consider it, once we are six feet under.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

We don’t have anything booked; our boy, Cam, has some unique health challenges meaning we’ve had to take a bit more caution than others in playing live. We’re hoping that starts to change in the next few months and by next summer we’re back on the touring schedule. Keep an eye on our website and socials (linked below) for our next shows.

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

Overall, we’re not too picky. A place that has great sound and a fun crowd: we’re down to party. Some of the more vibey places like Red Rocks would be neat, and we’ve heard great things about the South American scene.

What else can we expect from in 2022?

We’ve got 2 singles out: Over My head & Six Feet Under are available everythere. We’ve got a few more after that in September onward, so stay in touch on our socials where we post “pre-save” links, and follow us on Spotify & Bandcamp for the latest releases. We’re also starting to play live again, COVID-permitting, so keep an eye out for a show near you.
