Album Review: Black Honey – Written & Directed

Brighton based indie-rock four-piece Black Honey are releasing their second album “Written & Directed” on 19 March!

The album is a 10-track mission statement which aims to unashamedly plant a flag in the ground for strong, world-conquering women through its exploration of womanhood, identity and power.

“Written & Directed” begins with the brilliantly chaotic “I Like The Way You Die”. It is a thrilling start to the album with its electrifying riffs and explosive chorus, fully embracing the rock & roll sound Black Honey are known for before edging into a more old school sound in “Run For Cover”.

Frontwoman Izzy B. Phillips’ weightless vocals are the centre of attention on delicate indie track “Back Of The Bar”. The laid-back vibe alongside the racing chords have an oddly calming feel to them and repeat themselves later in “Summer ’92”, distracting from the full-on sound of the earlier songs and bringing a lightness to the album.

Throughout the album, Black Honey turn classic rock music on its head. From daring riffs to delicate vocals, “Written & Directed” is unapologetically unique and embraces a powerful feminist message that makes you want to raise a glass!
