Interview: The Only Ocean talks latest single ‘Wasted Days’

LA based alt-rock band The Only Ocean released their epic new single ‘Wasted Days’ on 29th October!

We had a chat to lead singer Wesley in the build up to the release about all things ‘Wasted Days’, his move to LA and how lockdown has been treating him…

Your new single ‘Wasted Days’ is out on October 29th, what is the song about?

Wesley: “’Wasted Days’ is about wasting all your time on someone and knowing nothing is gonna come from it.

“Sometimes it’s hard to accept that some people just don’t work together no matter how hard you try.”

How are you feeling in the build up to the release?

“I’m excited but a lil nervous. It’s always a weird feeling releasing new music. You work so hard on something that no one hears for months, sometimes years, and then one day it’s out and everyone hears it.

“Cliche but after that it’s not yours anymore.”

How has it been creating music during lockdown?

“Surprisingly really good! Since the start we’ve been sharing song ideas with each other (thank God for GoogleDrive).

“Whether it’s a complete song or just 30 seconds of music, it’s something we work on and share our ideas with each other. Since March we have 20+ ideas.”

What have you enjoyed about making music during lockdown? What challenges have you faced?

“I’ve been enjoying all the time I’ve had to create. There really isn’t too much to do other than that so it’s been nice.

“Sometimes when you’re playing shows your practices are just running the set, and if you’re lucky you go over a new song.

“We don’t have an excuse to not try to be creating. Even a bad day can bring you an unexpected song.”

Aside from music, have you been doing anything else to keep busy during lockdown?

“To be honest, that’s about it. I try to go play basketball when I can but I’ve been doing a terrible job at it.”

I saw that you’re originally from a small town called Lompoc, what inspired your move to LA?

“Once the new line up formed it just felt right. There was only so much I could do in my hometown (Lompoc) with the band being in LA. It’s been amazing though!

“I’ve met so many people and played so many shows that a small boy like me can only dream of!”

Have you got anything exciting planned for 2021?

“No shows at the moment but as soon as it’s safe you best believe we’re gonna be trying to play as many as we can!

“Other than that just putting out more new music and continuing the writing we’re doing now. I would love to start recording a new record as soon as we can.”

Once we return to some form of normality, what are you most looking forward to doing?

“Other than shows, just being able to see my friends. I didn’t realize how social I was until all of this happened.

“I just wanna have everyone I love with me sittin in the river at Kernville. It’s my happy place.”
