Interview: My Dark Rift

“Some scars never heal, some rifts never mend. Even the universe can attest to that.”
Ironically though it was the opposite of a rift that brought together the members of newly formed Swedish metal outfit My Dark Rift. Together the five musicians, all veterans in some way on the Swedish music scene, found a safe haven where they could feel relaxed, have fun and ventilate all the creativity that wouldn’t fit into their respective other musical endeavours.
The band consists of vocalist David Sundbom (ex-Skiller), guitarists Kristoffer Folin (Plan Three) and David Szücs (Degradead), bassist Mattias Lekborn (Furiam) and drummer Kenneth Holborn (ex-Degradead). With all members sharing a common love for hard rock and metal, there is room for both a nostalgic nod towards the thrash era of the 80s as well as the melodic death scene of more modern times.

But that will only get you so far in describing the music as there are no rules or boundaries as to what elements are welcome in the mix. Keen ears are sure to pick up other influences too such as the gloominess of doom and goth, the heaviness of stoner and sludge and even that catchy and melodic northern magic that can only be described as “that Swedish sound” that has given birth to success stories ranging from ABBA to Ghost.

Taking their name from the astronomical phenomenon known as the Great Rift (or sometimes the Dark Rift) the idea was to point out the connection between both the intimate scars that we carry in our human souls as well as the vastness of the rifts that runs straight through our galaxy.
The debut single “Make Me Stronger” was released on February 22, followed by the second single, “Devil’s Thunder”, that was released on May 10.

We caught up with the band for an interview!

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

Well the response so far has been great and way over our expectations. right now we are mostly focused on getting as many people as possible to hear it and spread the gospel.

Tell us something about the release no one knows?
well we are a pretty open band so we don’t keep many secrets. But i guess one thing would be that the song make me stronger was original called death lizard (in danish for some reason)

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Wow there are so many great artists we would love to be working with so its hard to just pick one.But bands like Slayer, Inflames or why not Metallica we would be happy to share the creativity with all of them.

How has your latest single been received?

Well so far we have received nothing but love for the our singles. Its been great and the single make me stronger is now well past 80.000 spinns on Spotify and still keeps going.

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

The track make me stronger is about that feeling of anger and hopelessness you can feel when someone like a boss or an authority abuses their power over you.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

No tours booked yet but we will be staring to book and play shows this fall. We are going to relese a few more songs first to give people some more songs to listen to before hitting the road.

What else can we expect from in 2019?

The next single is set for the end of august and hopefully not long after the album will drop Also we are going to start doing shows during the fall so we will be keeping busy trying to bring you all the best shows humanly possible.
