Interview: Threat System talk upcoming EP

Southern alt-rockers Threat System are set to launch their debut EP ‘OVERCOME’ at the end of April 2019.

This first release chronicles the band’s mental health struggles from depression and anxiety to insomnia and gender dysphoria. With a monicker that has it’s origins in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy widely used to treat anxiety) it’s no surprise that mental health is at the forefront of this band’s mission statement.

Threat System intend to show their audience that they are unafraid to expose their raw, unfiltered emotions and experiences with mental health, leading by example to create safe spaces for fans to talk and seek support for their own troubles.

‘OVERCOME’ will be available on all major platforms and physical copies will be available to purchase at the launch taking place at The Joiners, Southampton on 26th April with support from DALI and Minus Alive.

We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about their upcoming EP and more!

So how pumped are you for the release of your EP Overcome?

We are incredibly excited. We’ve been a band now for nearly two years, working on these songs and honing our sound into something we feel represents us and our message. There is no better feeling than knowing the one thing you’ve worked on for so long is so close to being out there. It’s like we’re itching to get it out, but at the same time it’s kind of nerve wracking because once it’s released we can’t perfect anything. We agonised over the masters for months, but there comes a time when you realise that part of the beauty is that it’s not ever going to be absolutely perfect and that’s actually okay! ‘Perfect’ is a social construct anyway. So despite the trepidation we are so excited to finally show people the hard work we’ve put into it.

What is your favourite track on the EP?

The general consensus seems to be Abyss, Martin also favours Flammable. For me though it really depends on the basis of the question. For instance if you were to say what is your favourite lyrically then it would have to be Abyss and I really enjoy people’s reactions to it, but the most fun I have when we play live is during Flammable, so maybe Martin is on to something there.

Can you tell us something about the EP no one else knows?

When we talked about this there were a few things I had completely forgotten about. Nasa reminded me that compared to the original demo’s we’ve had about 2 minutes shaved off of King of the World and Abyss. Dan mentioned that the original artwork was totally different to the hand, I recall us working on some designs for two-faced masks to represent the duality of the tracks and Martin was right when he said that we spent more time designing the artwork and our logo than we did recording the actual EP.

If you could work with a band on a new song, who would it be and why?

One thing that I really love about ThreatSy is how different all of our tastes in music are. I know Martin would love to work with IPrevail to get those luscious low growls in. Dan would love to work with local guys Our Propaganda and Nasa’s wanted to jam with Manchester giants Tirade, both of which are bands full of good friends of ours so maybe they could actually happen. We’re lucky to be living in a country with extremely talented up and coming artists so the possibilities really are endless for us.

So how pumped are you for the Joiners release show?

We officially started recording OVERCOME about a year ago and Martin accurately describes it as though we’ve been waiting for our own special Christmas. I love the Joiners, it’s a prestigious venue for Southampton, one of my favourite bands Enter Shikari played here before and after they got big. I feel there’s a lot of good energy in the place to impart onto the EP and us as a band launching something new. We are also incredibly excited to have our friends DALI and Minus Alive supporting us, the show is going to be immense.

What do you all get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

All four of us work jobs alongside the band so it’s more like, what do you do with your free half an hour on a Sunday evening each week? The guys play video games and we all hang out with our friends when we can. I write, Dan makes and paints models and Martin draws a lot so we’re quite arty, though Martin would have you believe all we do is eat pizza.

Will you be going on tour this year at all?

A great question! We have a few gigs in the pipeline but no official tour as of yet. That being said, we’re super eager to branch out and play new places, so that’s something we are definitely going to be focussing on once the EP is out.
