Live Review: Culture Abuse and High Vis at Doctor Martens Boot Room, Camden Market

The queue some forty-five minutes before doors open is already snaking down, the closing for day, market. Tonight’s guest only gig is helping to promote Doctor Martens release of their collaborative Sex Pistols inspired footwear (and clothing) range. First up is the intriguing High Vis whose lead singer looks like he’s either gonna sell you crack, nick your car or stick a knife in your ribs. The songs are punchy indie Punk and the bearded hipsters loved ‘em! The beautifully intimate Doctor Martens Boot Room is at bursting point (and a free bar is always welcome) for tonight’s headline act. Culture Abuse are the real deal (American) Punk band, catchy, smart and a shambolic joy to experience live.

The venue size doesn’t stop moshing, crowd surfing and some fans (and photographers) climbing the Meccano-esque stage rigging for a better vantage point. The band perform a short but volatile set made up mainly with tracks from last years critically acclaimed album ‘Bay Dream’. ‘So Busted’, ‘Bee Kind To The Bugs’ and a blistering ‘Dream On’ are all bellowed back to the now over-crowded stage. Even if you’re not overly familiar with Culture Abuse’s tunes you can’t help but be drawn in by the band’s infectious zest. It’s a sweaty, fun and all-inclusive performance that further proves Culture Abuse’s Punk Rock credentials. This is a band you should definitely keep on your live radar.
