Interview: Scant Regard

Will Crewdson is Scant Regard. A full on electro-popping, rockabilly dabbling, surf-guitar twanging industro-funk explosion in neon hues.

Also known for being the lead guitarist in Adam Ant’s band and The Selecter as well as his own Rachel Stamp and She Made Me Do It, Will really lets his roots show with this unique hybrid of guitar-driven, heavily beat-laden sci-fi mind’s eye soundtrack rage.

Scant Regard’s 5th album, Skipping Over Damaged Area has an overall theme of the apocalyptic destruction and devolution of the planet we live on. The demolishing electronic rhythms thread through it’s very core underlined by catchy riffs and almost pop-like choruses in places. Creating a sense of hope for a second only to plummet into the depths of doom the next. It’s an environmentally unsound joyride through the current human psyche. We caught up with Scant Regard for a recent interview!

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

Really well. I’m happy that the sound is moving forward and I’m still doing exactly what I want with this stuff. I also sold more of this album than all the other albums put together so I’m very pleased.

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

The only reason the CD is blood red is because there’s no colour for sweat and tears.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Depeche Mode probably. I would love to produce them and maybe wait till they left the studio and add some twangerific guitar solos. I think they’ve got the songwriting covered though.

How has your latest single been received?

Really well! It’s not very radio friendly but that was the point really. It’s strange but the only time people even approach the subject of radio play with me it’s normally to say “that won’t get played on the radio”. I did manage to get one of my tracks on 6 Music once though and that only had 3 words repeated all the way through so who can tell what’s gonna happen!

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

It’s just a call to step back from any kind of turmoil whether inner or around you and dispel it with one phrase. Which in this case happens to be “Fuck Everything”. Relatable? I think so.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

I’m touring the US West Coast with The Selecter in November and also playing a solo Scant Regard show at The Redwood Bar in downtown LA on the 12th Nov. I’m also doing 2 nights playing guitar with Adam Ant at The Roundhouse in London in December and have another Scant show on the 7th December at The Hope and Anchor.

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

The Redwood was great last time I did it. It looks and sounds great there. Nice pirate theme to the whole place. I love playing the Hope and Anchor too as there’s so much history there and Tim DeRella puts on a great night. As long as there’s people in front of me when I do it live I pretty much don’t care about the surroundings!

What else can we expect from in 2018?

More new music dropping as I lose grip on it and a new album early next year. In the meantime I just put out a 5 track covers EP with songs originally by The Church, Toni Basil, Danny Elfman, Edwin Starr and Frankie Valli. Find out which ones by visiting www.scantregard.com !
