Interview: Betty Moon talks latest single

Southern California based singer-songwriter and producer Betty Moon released her infectious and inspiring new single Parachute earlier this year via Spotify and Apple Music. Parachute is the 4th single from Chrome, her latest album which has been praised by influencers such as Huffington Post and Blog Critics. Moon is famously known for her trademark smooth, sultry and powerful voice creatively blends together musical influences of funk, rock, electronic and pop.

Parachute is Moon’s anthem of self-empowerment where listeners can harness her inspirational lyrics as a catalyst to rise above and take on the day with the utmost confidence and verve. With March being Women’s History Month, Moon felt inspired to release the single as a way to pay homage to the ‘badass Women of rock n’ roll’ throughout history and also focus on all Women who are up next to take over, inspire and create change.Check out the video for Parachute below!

So how has the release of Parachute gone down with fans?

It’s been a great response over the past month or so since releasing it officially. We made an amazing music video for it and after releasing it, the reaction grew even more! It’s great to know that people still appreciate music videos, and I’m really proud of how everything is turning out. We have it spinning in retail stores and bars across the country, and we’re getting tons of plays via Spotify and Apple Music. What more could an artist ask for?

Can you tell something about the single no one else knows?

Nobody in the band actually used a parachute in the making of this video. haha, only kidding but I don’t think anyone knows that the song almost didn’t make the record. We had so many other tracks in the hopper for ‘Chrome’, and I’m really glad we didn’t table this one. Sometimes things happen for the right reason, even if you didn’t know that at the time.

What’s the alternative music scene like in LA?

Well, it depends on what you consider alternative music! To me, I would consider that alt rock and grunge type acts from the 90’s but I know the more modern underground/alt type groups have that cool indie, technical and swagger rock all mixed together. There’s some other great groups out here that are actually doing the post rock & alternative 90’s thing which I’m so excited about. Really though, there’s just a great assortment of music out here in LA in every genre and likely hundreds of shows going on every week.

Will you be releasing an EP/Album this year?

I released my most recent album ‘Chrome’ in late 2017 and have been focusing on singles from that ever since. We’re actually in the studio already, working on new material for upcoming singles and likely my next album to be released end of 2018 or in early 2019. I’ve just had such a strong reaction on ‘Chrome’ that we want to make the most of this album cycle before moving on to all new material. I have an album almost done but may be just releasing one single at a time.

Will you be touring at all this year?

We’re working on some select dates regionally but no plans at the moment for any tours. However, if Jane’s Addiction wants to take us on tour we’ll drop everything and see you on the road!

What is your favourite track to play live?

Parachute kills live. Natural Disaster gets people crazed live. Its definitely unhinged and great fun to play live. There’s a Depeche Mode cover of “No Good” which to perform live. It’s always been a source of great energy live and gets those who are unfamiliar with my original music into the set. Who doesn’t love a good cover anyway??

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

It would be with the people I currently work with, co-write and record. I’m fairly happy with my team. Happier than I’ve ever been actually.

What was the first ever gig you went to?

I saw Santana with my dad. I also think I saw the Police around the same time at The Edge on Church St in Toronto a hundred years ago. It really inspired me and lit the spark for me to get into music, writing and performing.

What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

Well, as of late I feel like my spare time has been spent moving from The Valley to my new home in Malibu and getting organized out there.

I go to the beach a lot and fly about town doing this or that. I play a little tennis. Most of my spare time is spent traveling, working on exciting ideas for my businesses and being a personal trainer at Equinox here in the Los Angeles area. I love staying busy and keeping people motivated. Evolver Music is doing great right now and I’m becoming more and more entrepreneurial. I’m also looking at building a new house and recording studio on the west side. Tomorrow, the world.
