Echoing back to the days of parachute pants and the New Wave Synth beats emerges an electronica, alternative-exotica, New Wave artist ~ Renate! Her vocal range parallels Siouxsie Sioux, Gene loves Jezebel along with other female driven iconic artist; Renate’s vocal command is audacious full of rhythmic uncompromising sonic experimentation. Riding the fine line between post punk, dark wave and electronica all wrapped up in the retro vibe that’s sweeping the music scene.
Renate is an independent artist that since her first EP Be Your Own Phoenix (2015) containing songs like Just Let Go and Red Tape, has made a journey from electronic power pop to a slightly darker scenery of the electronic genre. On her new single Event Horizon she gets personal, raw, and uncensored.
Originating from the north of Norway she now lives in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she collaborates with a variety of producers. On her latest release she has gotten “down and dirty”, taking tighter control over the process to create just the sound she desires. 2018 looks darker now. In a good way. Check out Event Horizon below!
We managed to catch up with Renate as she talked about her latest released and more!
So how has the release of Event Horizon gone down so far with fans?
It seems like they connected with it in a different way. I am really pleased with the respons. It resonates with me more and that builds a new bridge between us. Some said it is more me. I can accept that statement.
Can you tell us something about the track no one else knows?
If I told you I would have to kill you. Nah, I don’t know.. it has no secrets. It is the first step in a new way for me to create. No rules.
Would you say this is different to any of the music on Be Your Own Phoenix?
Yes I would most definitely say it is different. On all levels. The process of making it, the sound, my singing style, the lyrics, the composition. The feeling over all. More me, more raw.
Will you be releasing an album or EP following this release?
I will release another single, “Gemini” on the 1st of June and after that I will figure out what to do next. I like not being bound to any formats in these wonderful “do-it-yourself-times”. I want to create and release as I go. Let’s see what happens.
If you could work with any artist or band on a new song, who would it be and why?
That is the toughest question! I will go for a band I recently discovered. Liima. Because I have been listening to their last album “1982” non stop for the last three weeks! I saw them live and was blown away by their presence on stage. A band in perfect and beautiful harmony. The sound penetrated my chest.
Have you got any tours lined up for 2018?
No tours yet. Maybe 2019. I need more time and material. I’m in no rush.
What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?
I work as a graphic designer, makeup artist, translator, t-shirt print designer. I create to say the least.
What’s the alternative scene like in Gothenburg?
It’s big and varied. “Everybody’s” part of some sub culture. It really hit me like a wave when I first came here. I’m just a island girl that barely knew the meaning of the word. I love it. There is a tribe for everybody.
