Interview: Give ‘Em Hell, Kid talk latest EP

Give ‘Em Hell, Kid is a post-hardcore band tilting on the edge of aggression and melancholy. Based out of Virginia beach, Virginia, Give ‘Em Hell, Kid began writing their first set of songs in mid 2014. They released their first demo album in mid 2017, titled, Some Say in Fire. They have been described as both ‘violent’ and ‘soothing’ to the ears, as well as visually stimulating. Currently the band is getting ready to begin touring and they are reworking some things, along with working on new music. Each member of the band has had their hands in music or in art for most of their existence. What’s more is that the bands first album is completely unique in the idea that the band wrote Some Say In Fire on their own. It’s catchy and a little choppy at parts, but it’s also playful and serious. Currently, their debut EP Some Say in Fire is out now! Check out Coming to Terms below!

We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about their latest EP and more!

How has the release of your debut EP Some Say In Fire gone so far?

Ryan: A lot of people in the local scene had been waiting for it to be released, and we would have done it sooner, but we ran into a lot of problems right as we had wrapped up everything. We made mistakes, but as far as we can tell, everyone enjoys it a fair bit.

Casey: I’m super stoked on how people are receiving the record! We cant wait to start touring with the record all across the country.
Tyler: People seem to enjoy King of Suffering.
Jason: We’ve been playing these songs since 2014 so up until recently the only way to hear us was at a show. Its like the songs are brand new again.

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

Tyler: The title is based off the Robert Frost poem
Ryan: What would seem like months, maybe even a year of planning, all kinda was thrown out in last minute, because we had a lot of conversation with people higher in the music industry who were telling us to hold off, and go rework things. Unfortunately, due to a lack of common sense on a person we were working with, we were unable to go back and rework things.
Casey: We went through a few producers to make this record. Once we found who we finally wanted to work with, the last producer lost the master tracks. We lost the opportunity to finish the record the way we wanted when he lost the tracks, so we released it as is. We are still proud of what we have, but to us, its not finished.
Jason: We were going to have the EP remixed and remastered by producer Matt McClellan who we were referred to by Daniel Wand of Capsize, he’s produced them, as well as Being As An Ocean. However, we still have plans to work with Matt on future releases. Also a lot of people don’t know that GEHK used to be a dual vocalist band, around the time I entered the picture their 2nd vocalist moved on to pursue other things and Ryan reworked the lyrics and vocals pretty drastically.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Ryan: We would love to work with either Capstan, or The Ongoing Concept on a new song. Those guys have so much energy and we would love to just feel that surge from the opposite end of things. On a personal level I would love to get a chance to have Ala.ni be featured on a track with me. She has so much pain in her voice and I love that.
Jared: Agreed on Ongoing Concept.
Jason: I don’t know about full band, that just sounds like a mess trying to write. Its hard enough with one band. Now some feature vocals from somebody like Spencer from Underoath, or Bert from the Used would be cool. A. because those are two of my idols. and B. because I think they both have voices that would lend well to our music.
Casey: Tenacious D for me
Tyler: For me it would be an honor to work with Oli Herbert of All That Remains, because of the level of musicianship and the creative thought process behind the writing of his music.

How has your latest single been received?

Ryan: The Thriller Killer Whisky Richard was our latest single release and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We made a lyric video for it, and it was pretty fun.
Casey: It has been a fan favorite for those that like to let loose at live shows.

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

Casey: Ill let Ryan have this one.
Ryan: It’s about getting drunk and having a party, and just a major focus on how when you are in that moment of intoxication, you are a god, at least in your own mind.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?
Ryan: We can’t really say what our plans are just yet, but the van has gas in it and we are ready, so be on the look out this summer.
Casey: We will be announcing some cool stuff soon.

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

Ryan: We are very excited to play some house shows, to be honest. There is a raw kind of energy that you get when you play a house show that you can’t replicate in other venues.
Jason: I don’t know that I have any venue in particular. I hope one day to play the college stadium venue in my hometown called William and Mary Hall, not because i like the town or venue, I just told a group of friends a long time ago from the crowd that I would be on that stage one day. They laughed me off but I was dead serious and I am still. Its a dumb pride thing to be honest. Chain Reaction in California. That venue has so much history to it.
Casey: Chain Reaction in California. That venue has so much history to it.
Tyler: Same.

What else can we expect from you in 2018?

Tyler: 2018 will be the year we take our biggest steps as band. Our goal is to be writing new music and touring consistently.
Ryan: We are working on some new music, so we are more than likely gonna release a song or two this year as we get further into it. We may do some acoustic sets, we shall see. The main thing we want to focus on though is touring and getting out of Virginia.
Casey: Shows, shows, shows!
Jared: We have found our style and are working on some new songs that will blow this last record release away.
