Interview: Diamante talks latest cover

It’s 2018 and 21-year-old Diamante is ready to take on the world. Recently she shared a cover Lower Than Atlantis’ Had Enough

Originally recorded by Lower Than Atlantis, the artist’s take on Had Enough turns the song into an empowerment anthem.

Had Enough is the fourth track released from her forthcoming debut record due out later this year on Better Noise Records, following Haunted, Sleepwalking and the breakout track Coming In Hot. Produced by Howard Benson (Chris Cornell, Kelly Clarkson, My Chemical Romance, Halestorm), the upcoming collection brings to light a signature sound the artist has been developing meticulously since age 13.

With her edgy style, sultry vocals, pop sensibility, and unabashed swagger, the Mexican-Italian-American solo artist draws from myriad influences and calls to mind legends from a spectrum of rock icons including Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, and Bowie. Check out Had Enough below!

We managed to catch up with Diamante as she talked about her latest release and more!

So how has the initial response been for your Lower Than Atlantis cover Had Enough?
It’s been great! I’m very excited that people love the song as much as I do, and because I’m always interactive with the people who follow my music I’m able to see their reactions first-hand, so it’s been a lot of fun!
Are you a big fan of Lower Than Atlantis or Superman?
I was a huge fan of the song the moment I heard it because I was taken aback in the best way possible by how honest the lyrics were, that level of honesty is always something I strive for in my own music. As for Superman, definitely! I am a fan of superheroes in general, but Jessica Jones is my favourite at the moment.
Can you tell us anything more about your upcoming album?
The album has an overall theme of empowerment. Each song is its own battle, and I talk about some of my own personal battles and how I’ve overcome them. This album is both vulnerable and strong at the same time, it is honest to who I am not only as an artist, but a person as well. The music itself is also inspired by rock from the 80s, particularly by the women of that era.
If you could work with any band or artist on a new song, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate one day with Joan Jett because she is one of the women who has not just opened the door, but literally bashed down the door for all girls like myself to live in the world of rock n’ roll. I have and always will admire her courage to stick it to the man in a time when women playing rock music was not necessarily conventional.
What’s the alternative scene like in LA at the moment?
Thriving as usual! Haha I used to live right in the centre of Hollywood and always loved how everyone was free to look how they pleased, act how they wanted, and listen to the music they wanted without any judgment. The alternative scene feels more like a community than anything, and it’s a feeling of belonging that I haven’t felt anywhere else.
What was the first gig you ever attended?
The first rock show I ever attended was a Judas Priest concert with Black Label Society and Thin Lizzy when I was fourteen. I remember being so moved by not just the energy of the show itself, but also the energy of the crowd. It was one of the moments where I decided being on a stage and singing rock music was what I wanted to do with my life.
How have the guys at Better Noise Records helped you become the artist you are today?
Better Noise has and continues to sculpt me into the artist I have always wanted to become. They have pushed me to tell my story, be fearless, and hone in on a musical sound that resonates with who I am. I feel with this upcoming album that I am beginning to really come into my own, and I am excited to see where the music goes from here.
Will you be touring the UK at all this year?
I hope so, touring the UK has always been on my bucket-list! If not the UK this year, it will definitely happen in the future because I am on a mission!
If you could play at any venue in the world, where would it be and why?
The 02 arena in London of course! Haha but in the U.S. I would love one day in life to play Madison Square Garden, just for the history alone of great artists who have played there. New York City is also one of my favourite cities because I spent every weekend of my childhood there, and playing a venue there of that capacity would be an incredible full-circle moment.
