Interview: Brockley Forest talks latest single

Bristol rock duo Brockley Forest who have recently released a music video for the track Taboo taken from our latest EP The Die has been Cast The video was filmed in locations throughout Bristol including the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge and features Friendly Records and legendary break-dancer HoWing Cheung.

The duo, Seb & Dec, are now recording their new single, due for release this Autumn. Friends since the age of 11, the duo cemented their kinship with a cross-country trip through America, spanning 10,000 miles and a temporary habitat in the Mojave desert. Upon returning to the UK, Brockley Forest was born.

We managed to catch up with the band as they talk about the latest single and more!

So how has the video for Taboo gone so far?

Filming required a month of 7 am wake up calls on Sunday mornings while the streets were still quiet and the natural lighting not too bright. Lots of running for Seb. Intense heat, especially when Seb was wearing a suit and running up hills. The video was completely DIY, with the help of our cameraman Zoltan Nagy and good friend Greg Want. One of our most adrenaline fuelled shots was running in the middle of the suspension bridge.

The video has had a great response since its release just over a week ago and has reached a lot of people who hadn’t heard of us until now. Itching to get started on the next one now.

Tell us a bit about the track no one knows

The concept of ‘Taboo’ takes inspiration from ‘The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are’ by Alan Watts which explores an unrecognised but mighty taboo, our tacit conspiracy to ignore who, or what, we really are…

Has the EP The Die Has Been Cast gone down well also?

We recorded the EP over a year and a half ago in Oxford with Ian Davenport. Since then we’ve sold out of our limited physical release, only have a handful of limited t-shirts left, and have received some great reviews and support throughout the UK.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

As they combine some of our favourite artists we would say The Dead Weather. The Kills have been one of our biggest influence since Brockley began and we both love bands like QOTSA, anything with a good groove.

What do you guys like about the alternative music scene in Bristol at the moment?

The DIY attitude is infectious. Not just from bands, but from promoters and venues alike. Bristol has been so good to us and like anything else, the more you give to the city, the more you get back.

Did you get a chance to watch Fat Lip Festival this weekend?

Unfortunately not. However, we did manage to catch some of August Burns Read at The Fleece. Admittedly, it’s not our favourite genre of music but it was a great performance. You could feel a real sense of community among the hardcore crowd.

Will you be touring the UK at all this year?

We’ve got a lot of shows coming up around the South West and Wales over the next few months. Our first European tour with a well know Bristol punk/rock band is also on the cards but we’ll keep that hush hush until it’s confirmed.

Will there be new music out at all this year?

We are writing and rehearsing new material in the studio at present. We’re working towards releasing a new single this Autumn, and a new video before the year is through.

What has been your funniest moment while recording the latest music video?

We did one scene on a cul de sac. There was a guy who was acting really strange on the pavement and then freaked out when he saw a 6 foot 7 businessman on a Sunday morning sprinting down the road with his briefcase. It turned out this guy was tripping on Mushrooms and as a result found the whole situation very overwhelming. Come to think of it… maybe he should have been in the video…
