Interview: Massolit talks latest EP

unnamed
Massolit is the Montreal/New Jersey based project of Patrick Drummond, featuring a rotating cast of musicians and sounds. More of a collective than a band, Massolit takes on multiple genres and emotions with a fearless energy and effortless cool. The release Western Flyer is inspired by the sounds of those late neon nights and strange sunny days, a history that never really was. Warm radiant energies and cool sunny psych. The EP was recorded with members of NJ’s Roman Love, a krautrock revival band currently making waves around the area.

We managed to speak to Patrick as he talked about the EP, new music, proudest moment and more!

So how has the release of Western Flyer gone since its release?
The release has been pretty mellow. Using too much social media and self promotion feels heavy handy and to make a project into too much of an online presence takes away from the art itself. Instead of doing a lot online we’ve mostly been sending tapes to smaller zines and websites and keeping it underground.

Tell us about the EP
It’s a culmination of a lot of what we were working with and thinking about for years, but the process of writing and recording was done very quickly. From out first practice to mastering the tape was maybe six weeks. We’re really interested in taking pop music and adding some interesting atmospheres and elements to it that wouldn’t quite be expected.

What is your favourite song from the release?
Faraday is head and shoulders above anything else I’ve ever written. Massolit is more of a collective than a band, so each track features contributions from a different set of musicians. Faraday is really a duo collab between myself and Weed Torman (Roman Love’s mastermind). And Jojo’s harmonies are absolutely incredible. It’s a kraut-pop song on a DIY tape, what’s not to love?
Will there be new music on it’s way soon?
I’m definitely working on new things, hopefully having some kind of single out by Summer 2017. It’s pretty tough to be in a band and be a full time student as well… I’ve collected more musicians to get on board and we’re going to be making some interesting moves for sure.
How much does it mean to you when you see people listing to your music?
A friend of mine told me that she listened to the tape while cleaning up her new apartment. That’s pretty cool. It’s something fresh on the ears while you freshen up the house.

If you could work with any artist or band on a song, who would it be and why?
If we could work with anyone it would definitely be Laetitia Saider. She’s a personal hero. Weed actually spent a bunch of money to buy the vintage moog that she used to take out out tour. Her records have such a lush, experimental sound but they’re still danceable, and the marxist lyrics are awesome (and even more relevant today).

What has been your proudest moment to date?
The proudest moment has probably been when we played a show at See Gallery in Montclair NJ, and some dudes in other bands were asking us what kind of vintage gear we used. It’s always nice to impress the gearheads.
(It’s a ’77 Gibson S-1 and a ’79 Gibson SG)

Is there an upcoming gigs soon?
We’re booked for :
February 21st @ La Vitrola, Montreal QC
April 1st @ Quail De Brumes, Montreal QC
And I’m also working on arranging some more experimental shows. I’m going to be working with some performance artists on special events that explore the boundaries between live art and music, and attempt to challenge the expectations of what’s accepted at a DIY show, keep in touch on my instagram, @hardcore.ufos, for those dates!
