Delinquent: usually refers to young people who break the law, break rules, often termed juvenile delinquent.
Life trundles on, we all experience the good, the bad and the downright hideous, there’s a lot going on that we barely understand, too much information and misinformation have muddied the waters, and our brains and bodies have already boarded the handcart to Hell.
Today, I have for you David Delinquent and his merry band of I.O.U’s, our fellow passengers on the ride out of here, who bring along their little care package of croonsome wonders to make the journey more tolerable.
It is indeed a pretty little collection of tunes to add shimmer and shine to the mundane, the daily mediocrity of standing in line for a cheese sandwich.
‘Does it scare you going home’
As you all know by now, I love cats and the opening number here ‘Alleycats in Love’ is right up my er alley as it struts and strays through the sofas and trash, the gentle ‘shoo-bops’ tethering us with its convivial charm and cheer. At 1.43 we get a sprinkle of ‘The Lovecats’ with the click your fingers, dum dum dum dum tiptoeing around the room, all furry and fuzzy – just so damn cute!
Taken from the soon to be released album ‘Scandal’ we find this mutinous crew braving tempestuous waters to vie for our identity, independence and our sanity as our compassion implodes and we stoop to levels yet undiscovered by humankind to devour and decimate our integrity. It is not a sudden failure; it has been creeping up on us and now we stand seconds from its deadly impact.
Luckily, the ‘Rocksteady Girl’ promenades across the dancefloor, giving us two minutes of her precious time, and giving me the distinct Ramones flavour that I am under the influence of.
The gentle swagger of ‘Shame of my Youth’ sends a comet crashing through my carcass, I immediately get Big Country harmonies, Scottish ambience and warmth, that tease and taunt me of a time gone by. I am innocent, naïve and full of dreams.
The band is David Delinquent – vocals/guitar, Jason Paterson- guitar/vocals, Scott Sweeney- bass/vocals, and Bonnie Ross – saxophone/vocals and Gordon McNally on drums, all the music was written in house and all the lyrics by David, cementing a fellowship and camaraderie that is evident in the performance and delivery.
‘When I need to feel a million miles away’
As we meander towards the end of this story, we are presented with what I like to call ‘the phone call song’ and with ‘Time of my Life’ the soundtrack to ‘my broken mental health’ I wonder does music make bad news more palatable? Is that why we relate to songs that reflect our own devastation.
‘I wanted nothing but the time of my life’
Is that really too much to ask?
