Some songs tell love stories. Others settle scores. Janet Devlin’s latest single, Diane, simply asks one question: have you heard what happened? The answer, of course, is yes – because in a small town, everyone has.
Swapping heartbreak for hearsay, Devlin delivers a towering slice of country rock that celebrates one of humanity’s oldest guilty pleasures: gossip. Rather than pretending she’s above the whispers, she embraces the chaos with a knowing grin, inviting listeners to revel in every sideways glance, half-truth and scandalous revelation.
Inspired by life in a close-knit rural community, Diane captures the speed, absurdity and irresistible pull of rumours as they spiral wildly out of control. As Devlin herself explains, “Every town has a Diane, and mine’s is no different. Every so often there’s a post (or ten), not so subtly spilling the tea. That sends me off on a little rabbit hole trying to put the pieces together. Who needs Netflix true crime docs when you can do your own detective work at home!” It’s a sentiment that perfectly sums up the song’s playful self-awareness – less a warning against gossip than a celebration of how impossible it is to resist.
Diane leans into a grittier side of Devlin’s Americana sound. Crunching electric guitar riffs snarl beneath crashing drums while her twang-laced vocals cut through with equal parts bite and charm. There’s a rough-around-the-edges swagger throughout that suits the subject matter perfectly, giving the track the feeling of a live band having as much fun as the listener.
That looseness is precisely what gives Diane its character. Recorded at Nashville’s famed Blackbird Studios, the song charges forward with infectious momentum, embracing energy over perfection. Every chorus lands with the confidence of someone who absolutely shouldn’t repeat what they’ve just heard – but inevitably does.
By the time the final chorus rolls around, it’s impossible not to join in. Whether you’ve met a Diane before – or perhaps you’ve been somebody else’s Diane – Devlin has delivered one of her boldest, funniest and most infectious releases to date. Sometimes the best stories aren’t found in headlines; they’re hiding behind the words, “You didn’t hear this from me…”
