‘I am numb from head to toe’
It’s been a very busy time for me recently at work and I’m now trying to cover as much as possible, sadly I’ve missed a lot. Amongst the carnage that is my life, I managed to catch up with my friends Lucéith at The Dark Horse in Moseley recently and following that show we can now celebrate the release of the EP ‘Daughter Of A Psycho’, or DOAP for those of the hard of spelling, hahaha.
For a band that are new and cutting their teeth on every surface imaginable, I find them incredibly fresh and exciting. Their songwriting is something that I am really interested by; their words and how they express what is happening in their lives is an art in itself. To then arrange all of those emotions and scrambled brain matter into a cohesive and sensitive body of work, it is a hats off moment. I wasn’t able to attend the EP launch, but from reports I have seen, it went with a bang, and quite frankly I’m not surprised.
The ongoing argument of ‘there are no new bands’ to me is senseless and baseless, ( see also CHERRYDEAD), our utterly soul destroying experience with Covid has created an atmosphere of fear, despondency that I feel people are finding difficult to shake off.
Listening to singer Lee Ellis I get very instructive, and confident vibes, she approaches this record with a vivacity that leads her bandmates in an inspiring and intelligent manner.
The EP is very well paced, it has a measure twice, cut once approach, you can tell the work that has gone into it. There is a strength in the musicianship that belies their youth, it promises to be a very productive and vibrant industry if the correct support is in place,
‘Numb’ will find you curled up on the bathroom floor, exhausted from life’s misery, but what do you do when you have been dealt a cruel hand?
My favourite is ‘Seventeen’ an audacious number, clear, concise and it has a discernible character that I find difficult to argue with.
For when you are found ‘Half Alive’ after misjudging your inaction, feel the burden of ‘Consequence’ as it pulls you under. We rely too often on our interrupted and disturbed psyche, it hinders any attempt that new music makes to connect, open up my friends, let it beguile you, where there is unity, there is opportunity. That in itself is a gift that will keep on giving, the payback on your investment is priceless.
Remember, diamonds are created from under the weight of mountains.
With both Lucéith and CHERRYDEAD firmly situated to represent our region, could it be that Cynthia is the daughter of a psycho?
