Interview: Shallow Honey

1 Please introduce yourselves

We’re a Brighton-based alt-rock four piece that fuses rock and pop with feminist topics, formed in the wake of the 2020 lockdown. Our music is 90’s inspired grunge mixed with the passion of the riot grrrl scene.

2 Favourite moment of the year?

Joining CorCroLand festival in Croydon was the biggest highlight for us. PLaying with some of our most favourite bands – Berries, Loose Articles to name a few, mixed with the just pure and wonderful vibes of the festival – felt more like a community coming together than a regular event.

3 What’s your dream festival & who would you love to perform with?

Our dream festival would be Reading and Leeds – the ultimate UK rock festival. A band we would love to perform with is Mannequin Pussy, because of their contrast of quiet and loud sound, that is unapologetically teamed up with feminist topics and powerhouse energy. They’re so special and we’re so excited by them.

4 What’s your take on AI and fake bands flooding streaming services?

It’s absolutely mind blowing that we’re living in a time where authentic creative art is being pushed aside by low cost, low effort and robot driven content. It’s scary.

5 Physical vs Streaming. What’s your opinion on how they affect the music industry now & the future for both?

Physical of course! Having something to hold, something to own is real art – feels more precious. It’s also a big way bands can fund the costs of creating their art – so we are big fans of being able to share physical pieces of our work, much like an artist would with a painting.

6 People are making noise complaints when moving into properties near live music venues. What would you do to keep both parties happy?

Land is becoming more and more built up – this sits with the council to prioritize existing properties. Music venues need more protection, just as pubs do – are we really going to end in a world existing only of houses, coffee shops and supermarkets? Sure feels that’s the direction we’re heading. To keep everyone happy – home owners need to go into their purchase with the correct expectations – if they live by a venue, more thought and investigation needs to be in place to ensure they know what they’re getting into, and not the venue taking the hit.

7 What’s your take on shows with mobile phones being banned? Is it good for concerts to be documented or are cameraphones too intrusive?

Yes, phones can be intrusive – I think the artist should have autonomy over the decision. You wouldn’t take a phone into a cinema, but sometimes, maybe, it’s a great way to document and relive the event. But who really looks back at the videos they take at shows, anyway…

8 What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Pretty much any song by Metric – their back catalogue is huge and every song is gold. Super under rated band. Can’t beat a pop rock mix! If we had to pick one, “help i’m alive” or “lost kitten”. Just, wow!

9 What’s your favourite tour story?

My (Rai, vox)  favourite story (because it ended well) is when Carl, our bassist, caught me from falling off the stage. I misjudged the height of the stage when coming back up – within only a nano second, he saw I was about to fall backwards and grabbed me – I am still not sure how he managed to do it – he is super human!

10 Any releases planned?

In the winter we have a very special release coming. We can’t say more than that for now. As of right now, enjoying putting our single “ WHAT YOU MADE ME DO” out into the open with our new band mate Seb, especially as it is released with a couple of songs we recorded with someone special, who is no longer with us. Meaningful to us in lots of ways, closing one chapter and starting anew.
