Interview: Salt Ashes Talks Electrifying Single ‘Bad Things Right’ And Being Misjudged

Bad Things Right’ tackles themes of rebellion and misjudgement. How did your personal experiences shape the song’s narrative?

This all happened to me in school, so I lived it. People assuming or just out right accusing me of doing shit I hadn’t done and it was so isolating that you end up thinking “fuck it”.

You’ve spoken about rebelling against being cast as a villain. How do you think this message resonates with your fans?

In the world we live in now with social media I think everyone gets judged based on whatever is online so I think most people have experienced something like this once or more in their lives. I wish it wasn’t the case to be honest!

Your sound is described as haunting and infectious. How has your music evolved since your debut release?

Working with different producers helps with this evolution of sound to be honest as each producer has definitely brought a bit of themselves into the sound. The first album was definitely more strings heavy and leaning more into that disco noir sound and the second album brings some more live elements.

Your vocals are a standout feature of your music. What techniques or emotions do you draw upon to create such haunting performances?

Thank you! I think I just try and feel everything I’m singing. I’m not sure how else to describe it really… I guess, I try and create dynamics with the tone and deliver it in a way story telling way.

Tracks like Didn’t See It Coming have gained incredible momentum. What has been your most memorable fan or industry reaction so far?

When Elton John opened one of his radio shows with this track I was totally gobsmacked and blown away. Just hearing him say my name was mental. This was a standout moment for me. Oh, also when someone got a tattoo of a car and graphic that featured in my music video for “Raided” – crazy.

Bad Things Right is about self-liberation. What advice would you give to listeners who feel trapped by others’ perceptions of them?

I honestly don’t think I’m in a position to give this advice hahaha as I’m trying to free myself from what people think of me all the time. If anyone has any advice – let me know!

Looking back on 2024, what accomplishment or moment stands out to you the most, either musically or personally?

2024 has been a very tough year to be honest as I’ve had to take the whole year off for a vocal issue which is still unresolved. A three month break turned into a year break. I’ve been working with specialists to try and figure out the problem and get me back to singing again but so far we have had no real joy. So it’s been tough. Releasing Bad Things Right was a bit of musical joy in that time as its an old song that I never thought I’d release, so seeing how well it’s been received is uplifting.

What are you most excited about for 2025? Can fans look forward to more new music, tours, or other creative projects?

I’m looking forward to releasing some more unreleased music and seeing how it’s received. Sometimes the songs you thought people would hate are actually the ones they love! But mostly, I’m looking forward to, hopefully, my voice coming back and being able to do what I love to do the most – perform and sing! I just want to be able to sing again!! So send me all the healing vibes you can. <3
