Interview: Nina Nesbitt talks about her latest single ‘Anger’ and more!

Fresh from having just completed a dream tour as special guest to Stevie Nicks last month, acclaimed Scottish singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Nina Nesbitt returned earlier this month with one of her most personal tracks yet, ‘Anger,’ taken from her forthcoming album, ‘Mountain Music‘, out 27th September.

We caught up with Nina as she spoke about her latest single ‘Anger’, upcoming album ‘Mountain Music’ and much more!

So how has the release of your latest single ‘Anger’ gone down with fans so far?

It’s been so great! I think Anger is such a huge subject, people feel it for different reasons and express it in so many ways, so it’s been really interesting to see how my listeners have been relating it to their own lives. I can’t wait to play it live and let out some rage with everyone on tour!

Would you say it’s important to talk about anger in general and refuel in a different way like you have with this track?

It’s a topic I haven’t really approached before because I’m normally someone who is quite chilled. I’ve never really known how to express negative emotions but through writing this song and album I’m realising that writing is my vessel for that. I love that I’m able to use negative emotions and situations as fuel for creation and turn them into something positive.

What what was your favourite track to write on this album, was there any that stood out for you?

Writing this album was such a magical process. I wrote the whole album within a 2-3 month period, which is really quick for me! Normally it takes around 2 years. This time the songs all just came flowing out of me for some reason. Parachute was one of my favourites to write, it almost didn’t make the album but it’s now my favourite song so I’m very glad it did. I also loved writing Mansion. I wrote it on a mandolin that I had no idea how to play but I think sometimes it’s refreshing to pick up a new instrument you have no knowledge on and just go with what you think sounds good.

Are there any tracks off your upcoming album that you’re itching to share with fans?

I’m so intrigued to see which songs people connect with as I made this album in quite a different way. I’m normally on tour while writing and can trial songs out but this time it was written in complete isolation. Not only was it away from crowds, it was also mostly away from other writers, just me sat at home in a room with a guitar or piano. 10 out of the 12 songs were written at home alone, so I haven’t had much feedback apart from my friends and family! Some of my personal favourite unreleased ones would be Parachute, Treachery and Painkiller.

So you have a UK Headline tour in October coming up and some acoustic/signing tour dates next month, is there any particular venue you are looking forward to playing the most?

I’m always extra excited for a Scottish show as it feels most like home. I’m playing Glasgow, which is usually my favourite crowd. Us Scots are a rowdy bunch. But I’m just generally very excited to get back out there and watch these songs come to life, hear people singing the lyrics and find out which songs have connected most.

If you could work with any artist in the world on a new song, who would it be and why?

Dolly Parton – because she’s an icon. Not only in songwriting but life too.
