A Permanent Shadow talk new single ‘The Wait’!

When did the initial idea for your latest single come together?

“The Wait” was conceived during lockdown. It’s a song about personal crisis and not quite knowing where you belong in life. I wrote the lyrics first and then Albert the keyboarder and I came up with the melodies.

How would you describe the track, to a reader that is unfamiliar with the band?

It’s a very eighties sounding song, but hopefully it sounds current as well to the listener. It reminds me a bit of Future Islands, and there’s a guitar part which is not dissimilar to early Talking Heads.

Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the track?

We are often waiting for things to happen instead of making them happen. “The Wait” is a call to action to take life in your own hands instead of pitying yourself over lost opportunities and the weight of the world on your shoulders.

How would you say that the track compares to anything you’ve done before?

“The Wait” stands out as less guitar-driven than other songs on our current album “No Leaf Clover”. It’s more keyboard-based, more in the vein of our previous album.

What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?

As always, the chorus is the hard part. A chorus should be catchy and hummable. In this case I think we achieved that.

Why should a reader check out the track?

If you like New Wave, Post Punk and Synth Pop, this track is for you!

What else can you tell us about the track, that we haven’t covered in this interview?

“The Wait” was released with a video which was beautifully shot in the Catalonian village of Rupit. We used a drone for it in order to achieve some spectacular aerial shots. I’m quite happy with the results!
