After announcing her second studio album, Matriarchy, to be released 17th May, 2024, alongside a world headline tour, alt-pop icon girli unveils the official music video for brand new track ‘Nothing Hurts Like A Girl‘. The visual to the galvanising new single is an explosion of queer female love in its pure, unfiltered form. girli said: “This video is the modern-day continuation of the love story started in my previous music video, ‘Matriarchy’, set in an unknown historical past. I’m no longer a queen in a sapphic palace, I’m a girl in her mid-20s in 2023, susceptible to heartbreak and loss and naivety in love. The painting of my lover from the ‘Matriarchy’ video, the same lover in girli’s modern-day love story, is seen in a gallery; sapphic love stories have happened throughout history.” Director Claryn Chong commented: “The inspiration for the creative has come from identifying my own struggles with those of girli’s. The idea of the ‘painting’ — a key symbol across the whole project — originated from both historical and metaphorical ideas: historically, we find that so much of women’s art has been buried in history; art that holds truth and secrets and evidence of their worlds. Metaphorically, the painting sees women painting their own worlds, creating their own images, building their own girl — just as girli has done in this album.” Watch The Music Video For ‘Nothing Hurts Like A Girl’ The forthcoming full-length feels like a rebirth for the celebrated, multi-faceted artist, as she further explores her sound and takes the reins with full creative control, truly cementing her place as a cult figure and ambassador for the next gen of LGBTQIA+ music. The latest offering is a gleaming pop diamond forged out of post-breakup despair. “No one knows me better, nothing gets me wetter,” girli sings, celebrating the intensity of queer female love and desire in her own inimitable way. |

girli’s new era launched in September with the release of what is now revealed to be the album’s title track. ‘Matriarchy’, the single, is an unapologetic “massive middle finger up to the homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, patriarchal society we live in”, and a bold and beautiful portrayal of being in love with a woman and the female gaze. Diverging from the traditional sound that you might expect from the cerise-haired punk-pop chameleon, ‘Matriarchy’ is a statement of intent, showcasing girli’s evolution, diving further into the pop soundscape. Watch the music video here. girli’s passions have always migrated beyond music and she continues to use her platform to ignite conversations around feminism, sexuality, identity and mental health, opening up topics that most have always shied away from. Representation matters more so now than ever, and girli is ready to rewrite the rules. Milly Toomey (AKA girli) has been on an explorative journey of self-discovery, only to conclude that she can’t be boxed in. Her power is her vulnerability. Her courage is deep-rooted in years of self-reflection, feeling misshapen and not feeling as though she belongs. The North London native will forever use her platform to forge a new femininity, one that is bold and unrestrained. The new music comes fresh off the back of girli’s 2023 EP ‘why am I like this?’, which includes previously released singles, ‘Cheap Love’, ‘Imposter Syndrome’ and ‘I Really F**ked It Up’. |
